Job summary

MSALABS in Prince George, Canada, is seeking an Assistant Laboratory Manager to support daily lab operations, ensure quality, and lead staff in a production-oriented environment.

You will manage LIMS workflows, coordinate equipment maintenance, and assist in staffing, training and process improvements, while upholding ISO quality standards and safety.

Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science in Chemistry or related discipline.
• 5-10 years of laboratory experience and minimum 2 years in a supervisory/managerial role.
• Experience with ISO standards (9001, 14001, 45001, 17025) is advantageous.

Responsibilities

• Assist in managing client jobs within the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
• Oversee daily laboratory workflows to ensure timely completion of tasks.
• Coordinate routine maintenance and repair of laboratory equipment.
• Support inventory management and procurement of consumables.
• Enforce quality control procedures and SOP adherence.
• Train staff on new methods and SOP updates.
• Develop and validate laboratory methods.
• Monitor staffing levels and coordinate shifts.

The Assistant Laboratory Manager supports the Laboratory Manager in overseeing daily laboratory operations, ensuring the efficient execution of testing processes and compliance with quality standards. This role involves managing personnel, assisting in technical troubleshooting, maintaining laboratory equipment, and ensuring safety protocols are followed.

Job Requirements and responsibilities :

Operational Management:

• Assist in managing client jobs within the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
• Oversee daily laboratory workflows to ensure timely completion of tasks.
• Coordinate routine maintenance and timely repair of laboratory equipment.
• Support the inventory management process by tracking consumables and assisting in procurement.

Quality Assurance:

• Enforce quality control procedures under the guidance of the Laboratory Manager.
• Ensure adherence to established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
• Collaborate with the team to maintain compliance with quality certifications and documentation.

Technical Support:

• Provide hands-on support for complex testing and troubleshooting.
• Aid in training staff on new methods, SOPs, and updated protocols.
• Contribute to the development and validation of laboratory methods.

Staff Management:

• Assist in monitoring staffing levels and coordinating shift schedules.
• Support staff performance reviews and recommend training needs.
• Promote a culture of safety, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
• Proactively identify areas for process optimization.
• Assist in implementing cost-saving measures while maintaining quality.
• Stay updated on emerging laboratory practices and share findings with the team.

Education:

• Bachelor of Science in Chemistry or a related discipline.

Experience and skills required:

• 5-10 years of laboratory experience
• Minimum 2 years as a supervisor/manager.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
• Detail-oriented with the ability to multitask and prioritize under pressure.
• Production operation rather than chemical analysis
• Mechanical aptitude is a plus
• Familiarity with ISO 9001, 14001, 45001 and 17025 is an advantage
• Manual handling is a common thing here and exposure to outside temperature (winter / summer) is likely needed in order to manage the yard and forklift
• Organization and training skills, detail oriented.
