As we continue to grow, we are looking for an organized and detail-oriented Assistant Controller to join our finance team and contribute to our ongoing success.

Job Summary
The Assistant Controller will play a crucial role in supporting the Controller in managing the company’s financial operations. This role requires an experienced and driven professional who is highly organized, has excellent attention to detail, and is capable of managing multiple tasks efficiently. The Assistant Controller will assist in overseeing financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, internal controls, payroll, and accounting operations, and will help ensure that all financial processes are in compliance with applicable laws and regulations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the preparation of monthly and annual financial statements, ensuring accuracy and compliance with accounting standards.
  • Assist in the month-end and year-end close processes, including preparation of journal entries, balance sheet reconciliations, and ensuring all financial data is accurately reported.
  • Assist in the preparation of quarterly board meeting packages.
  • Assist with preparation of government remittances such as GST, payroll, and corporate tax according to statutory deadlines.
  • Collaborate with operating branches to gather financial data and assist in the preparation of annual budgets and forecasts.
  • Assist in the design and implementation of internal controls to ensure the accuracy and integrity of financial data.
  • Lead, coach, and mentor corporate office team members.
  • Assist in managing banking relationships and ensure all payables are processed in a timely manner.
  • Assist in managing the successful collection of accounts receivable.
  • Support the Manager of Finance & Legal with ensuring ongoing compliance with all laws and regulations.
  • Lead special projects, system improvements, and process enhancements to improve the overall financial efficiency of the organization.
  • Occasional travel to our branches in Edmonton and Winnipeg is required.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation is required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in accounting or finance roles, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or assistant controller role.
  • Experience using an ERP system (e.g. Acumatica) is an asset.
  • Strong understanding of accounting principles, financial reporting, and general ledger processes.
  • Proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite of products.
  • Experience with budget preparation, variance analysis, and financial forecasting.
  • Excellent organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with an eye for detail and accuracy.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to explain complex financial concepts to non-financial stakeholders.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team, with a collaborative approach to problem-solving.
