Job summary

The Canadian Museum of Nature invites applications for the Assistant Collection Manager, Mineralogy at the Natural Heritage Campus in Gatineau, QC. This permanent full-time role (37.5 hours/week) reports to the Curator and oversees five national subcollections: minerals, gems, mineral deposits, rocks and meteorites.

Responsibilities include care and storage of specimens, data curation, digitization support, and assisting with acquisitions, loans, and outreach.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Mineralogy or equivalent with relevant experience.
• 3+ years handling mineral collections in a museum/scientific setting.
• Experience with collection/data management systems and diverse data sources.

About the position

The Assistant Collection Manager is responsible for the effective management of five, national, earth-sciences subcollections: minerals, gems, mineral deposits / occurrences, rocks, and meteorites. Reporting to the Curator, the successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring the long-term care, organization, and enhancement of a diverse collection.

This role involves overseeing collection care and storage, managing and improving specimen data, and supporting digitization initiatives. The candidate will contribute to the growth and scientific value of the collection by identifying gaps, recommending acquisitions, and maintaining current knowledge of the specimen marketplace and best practices in collection management.

The position also requires providing expertise and guidance to internal and external clients, supporting research and public inquiries, and assisting with specimen loans and outreach activities. The successful candidate will collaborate with colleagues, train and guide students or volunteers, and contribute to institutional projects and priorities.

The candidate will have strong analytical thinking, sound judgment, and autonomy, with the ability to understand the strengths of an existing collection and identify opportunities for its development. A solid understanding of mineralogy, museum practices, and health and safety protocols is essential, as well as a commitment to maintaining professional networks and staying current in the field.

Education and training:

Bachelor of Science degree from a recognized university with a demonstrated concentration in Mineralogy or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience is required.

Language requirements:

English is essential. Bilingualism is an asset

Experience:

• 3 years’ experience working with mineral collections and a variety of geological materials
• Experience handling specimens in a museum/scientific environment
• Experience using collection/data management systems and working with diverse data sources (field notes, publications, archival materials) to enrich specimen records.
• Experience engaging with the broader mineralogical community (collectors, dealers, clubs, shows, etc.)
• Experience in cleaning, repairs and preparation of mineral specimens (an asset)
• Experience engaging with the public through tours, presentations, or outreach activities (an asset)
• Experience supervising, training, or coordinating the work of technical staff, students, interns, or volunteers (an asset)
