Job summary

Metis Nation–Saskatchewan Archives Team in Saskatoon is seeking an Archive Intern for a part-time, temporary position (Sept 2026–Mar 2027). The role supports archival processing, digitization, and records management in a governance-focused environment, including SharePoint inventories and transfer documentation.

You will gain hands-on experience handling sensitive Indigenous records, creating finding aids and metadata, and collaborating with multiple departments while upholding confidentiality

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in History, Indigenous Studies, Archival Studies, or related field.
  • Interest in archives, records management, digitization, preservation, or information governance.
  • Knowledge of Métis history, governance, and culture is an asset.
  • Experience with research, metadata creation, or information organization is an asset.
  • Must be able to lift and move archival materials weighing up to approximately 20 lbs.
  • Criminal Record Check prior to commencing employment.

Responsibilities

  • Appraise, arrange, describe, digitize, and preserve archival records and collections.
  • Assess the physical and intellectual condition of records and document archival decisions.
  • Create and update finding aids, metadata, inventories, indexes, file lists, and transfer documentation.
  • Support records management and digital governance initiatives, including SharePoint inventories and records transfer activities.
  • Assist with preparing records for preservation, access, digitization, and storage workflows.
  • Support the digitization and preservation of analog audiovisual materials.
  • Contribute to records tracking, retention, classification, and compliance documentation.
  • Maintain confidentiality and apply culturally appropriate handling practices when working with sensitive records.
  • Collaborate with internal departments, including IT, on records and information management projects.
  • Perform other archives, research, and documentation duties as assigned.

Brief Overview:

The Archive Intern will support the Métis Nation–Saskatchewan Archives Team through archival processing, digitization, and records management activities. The role contributes to information governance initiatives within the Archives and Records Management SharePoint environment, including records organization, tracking, inventory, and transfer documentation, while gaining hands-on experience in the stewardship of sensitive and culturally significant records.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Appraise, arrange, describe, digitize, and preserve archival records and collections.
  • Assess the physical and intellectual condition of records and document archival decisions.
  • Create and update finding aids, metadata, inventories, indexes, file lists, and transfer documentation.
  • Support records management and digital governance initiatives, including SharePoint inventories and records transfer activities.
  • Assist with preparing records for preservation, access, digitization, and storage workflows.
  • Support the digitization and preservation of analog audiovisual materials.

Knowledge and Skills:
  • Knowledge of archival, records management, library, or information management principles.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage information accurately and follow established procedures.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365 applications and digital file management.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion.
Qualifications:
  • Post‑secondary education in History, Indigenous Studies, Archival Studies, Library and Information Studies, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated interest in archives, records management, digitization, preservation, or information governance.
  • Knowledge of Métis history, governance, and culture is considered an asset.
  • Experience with research, metadata creation, or information organization is considered an asset.
  • Ability to lift and move archival materials weighing up to approximately 20 lbs.
  • Commitment to respectful and culturally appropriate stewardship of records.
Additional requirements:
  • This internship is funded by the Canadian Council of Archives through Young Canada Works at Building Careers in Heritage, a Canadian Heritage program that supports unemployed or underemployed college and university graduates entering the heritage, arts, and cultural sectors. Applicants must meet YCW eligibility requirements, including being legally entitled to work in Canada; being between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment; being a college or university graduate; being unemployed or underemployed; being able to commit to the full work assignment; and not receiving Employment Insurance while employed through the program.   • Must be able to provide a satisfactory Criminal Record Check prior to commencing employment.
  • A valid Saskatchewan driver’s license and/or access to reliable transportation to our downtown location is required.
