Job summary

6ixDesign Inc. is a multidisciplinary architecture and engineering practice based in Toronto. We work across low-rise and mid-rise residential, multiplex, commercial, mixed-use, and institutional projects, carrying them from early feasibility through permit, tender, and construction. What sets us apart is structural: architecture and engineering sit under one roof, so coordination happens down the hall instead of across three firms and a two-week email chain. Job Description

As Architectural Designer, you will take projects from first sketch to resolved design. You will run feasibility and zoning studies, develop massing and plan options, carry the strongest one through design development, and produce the drawings and presentations that get it approved by clients, municipalities, and committees. You will then stay with the project as it moves into permit and construction documentation, supporting the Job Captain and keeping the design intent intact as the set gets built out. This is a hands‑on role. You will be in Revit and Rhino daily. You will report to the Architectural Manager, work directly with Job Captains, senior staff, and the principals, and coordinate with our in‑house engineering teams as design questions become technical ones.

Key Responsibilities

• Concept and Schematic Design: Develop design concepts, massing studies, plan options, and unit layouts, and test them against site constraints, client program, and budget.
• Feasibility and Zoning Analysis: Run yield and massing studies, review zoning by‑laws and Official Plan policy, calculate GFA, coverage, setbacks, angular planes, and parking, and identify what the site will and will not support.
• Design Development: Carry the selected scheme from concept through resolved plans, sections, elevations, and preliminary assemblies, resolving the design against structural, mechanical, and code realities as they emerge.
• Modelling and Production: Build and maintain accurate Revit models, produce drawing sets to design development standards, and support the Job Captain through permit and construction documentation.
• Visualization and Presentation: Produce renderings, diagrams, material boards, axonometrics, and presentation packages that explain the design clearly to clients, municipalities, and the public.
• Municipal Submissions: Prepare drawings and supporting material for pre‑application meetings, Committee of Adjustment, minor variance, and site plan approval submissions, and revise in response to planner and reviewer comments.
• Code and Accessibility Review: Apply Ontario Building Code requirements, accessibility provisions, life safety, and spatial separation to your designs early, so schemes do not need rebuilding after the fact.
• Material and Product Research: Investigate cladding, glazing, envelope, and finish options, evaluate them against cost, availability, performance, and constructability, and make recommendations you can defend.
• Existing Conditions Documentation: Conduct site measurements and photo surveys, and produce accurate as‑built drawings for additions, renovations, and adaptive reuse projects.
• Coordination: Work with in‑house engineering and external consultants through design development, flagging conflicts while they are still cheap to fix.
• Practice Development: Build and improve Revit families, templates, graphic standards, and presentation formats used across the studio.

Must Have Qualifications

• Approximately 2 to 5 years of architectural design experience in a practice setting.
• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Architecture, or a diploma in Architectural Technology, from a recognized, accredited institution.
• Demonstrated ability to take a project from concept and massing through resolved design development.
• Working knowledge of the Ontario Building Code, municipal zoning by‑laws, and the Toronto or GTA approvals landscape.
• Advanced proficiency in Revit, along with AutoCAD, Bluebeam, and Microsoft Office.
• Strong proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, particularly InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator.
• Working proficiency in SketchUp, Rhino, or an equivalent modelling tool.
• A portfolio that shows design judgment and drawing ability, not only rendered images.
• Clear written and graphic communication, and the ability to present your own work.

Preferred Qualifications

• Intern Architect status with the OAA, or eligibility to pursue licensure.
• BCIN qualifications in relevant categories, including House or Small Buildings.
• Experience with Committee of Adjustment, minor variance, or site plan approval submissions in Toronto or the GTA.
• Rendering and visualization skills in Enscape, Twinmotion, V‑Ray, or Lumion.
• Exposure to purpose‑built rental, missing‑middle, multiplex, or laneway and garden suite typologies.
• Experience with renovations, additions, adaptive reuse, or heritage properties.
• Familiarity with Grasshopper, Dynamo, or other computational design tools.
• Experience working alongside in‑house or closely integrated engineering teams.
