Job description

Why 6ixDesign?

6ixDesign Inc. is a multidisciplinary architecture and engineering practice based in Toronto. We work across low-rise and mid-rise residential, multiplex, commercial, mixed-use, and institutional projects, carrying them from early feasibility through permit, tender, and construction. What sets us apart is structural: architecture and engineering sit under one roof, so coordination happens down the hall instead of across three firms and a two-week email chain. As our project volume grows, we are looking for engineers who want real technical responsibility and the room to develop into it.

Growth:

We are expanding our engineering department, and this role sits inside that growth. Your responsibility will increase as quickly as you demonstrate readiness for it.

Integrated Practice:

Our architectural and engineering teams share models and resolve issues internally. You will spend less time chasing consultants and more time solving the actual problem.

Path to Licensure:

You will work directly under licensed senior engineers who review your work, explain their reasoning, and support your progress toward P.Eng., including guidance on your PEO experience record.

Breadth of Work:

HVAC, plumbing, drainage, and fire protection across new builds, additions, and existing-building retrofits. You will not spend two years on a single building type.

Beautiful Workspace:

Our office is designed the way we design for our clients. It is a space built to support focused, collaborative work.

Competitive Salary:

We recognize and reward the value that each team member brings to the table. Our compensation packages reflect our dedication to attracting and retaining strong people.

Job Description

As a Mechanical Engineer, you will support building projects from initial load calculations and system selection through permit submission, construction documentation, site review, and coordination. This is a hands-on technical role. You will be running load calculations, sizing systems, producing drawings and schedules, sitting in coordination meetings, and answering for your work in review. You will start on assigned systems and move to whole projects as you demonstrate readiness, working under the supervision of senior licensed engineers and alongside our in-house architectural and structural teams, external consultants, contractors, and municipal reviewers.

Key Responsibilities
  • HVAC Design: Perform heating and cooling load calculations, select and size equipment, and design air distribution and hydronic systems for low-rise and mid-rise buildings.
  • Plumbing and Drainage Design: Design domestic water, sanitary, storm, and venting systems in accordance with Ontario Building Code Part 7, including fixture unit calculations and pipe sizing.
  • Fire Protection: Coordinate sprinkler and standpipe design, and review fire protection systems for code compliance and integration with architectural and structural elements.
  • Energy and Code Compliance: Ensure designs conform to Ontario Building Code Parts 6 and 7, SB-10 and SB-12 energy requirements, ASHRAE standards, CSA B149, and applicable municipal requirements including the Toronto Green Standard.
  • Drawings and Documentation: Develop mechanical drawings, schematics, equipment schedules, and specifications in Revit and AutoCAD to permit and construction-issue standards.
  • Design Calculations: Prepare mechanical calculations that are clear, traceable, and defensible under review by senior engineers and municipal examiners.
  • Permit Submissions: Assemble mechanical permit packages and respond to examiner comments and municipal review queries through to approval.
  • Existing Buildings: Support retrofit, addition, and system replacement work, including assessment of existing mechanical systems and evaluation of as-built conditions.
  • Multidisciplinary Coordination: Coordinate mechanical design with our in-house architectural and structural teams and with external electrical, civil, and landscape consultants, resolving clashes and service routing conflicts before they reach the field.
  • Site Review: Conduct field reviews, document observations, and prepare field review reports.
  • Construction Administration: Respond to RFIs, review shop drawings, and support contractors and clients through commissioning and the construction phase.
  • Practice Development: Contribute to the ongoing refinement of our internal standards, typical details, drawing production workflows, and QA procedures.
Must Have Qualifications
  • Approximately 1 to 2 years of professional mechanical or building services design experience on building projects.
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Building Services Engineering, or a closely related discipline from a recognized, accredited university.
  • Eligible for registration with Professional Engineers Ontario. Full licensure is not required for this role, and candidates at any stage prior to P.Eng. are encouraged to apply.
  • Strong working knowledge of the Ontario Building Code Parts 6 and 7, SB-10 and SB-12, ASHRAE standards, CSA B149, NFPA requirements, permitting processes, and construction requirements.
  • Demonstrated experience on low-rise or mid-rise residential, multiplex, commercial, mixed-use, or institutional projects.
  • Solid technical grounding in HVAC systems, hydronics, ventilation, domestic water, sanitary and storm drainage, and fire protection.
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare load calculations, drawings, equipment schedules, specifications, reports, and permit submission packages accurately and independently.
  • Experience coordinating mechanical design with architectural and structural teams.
  • Strong proficiency in load calculation and analysis software, Revit MEP, AutoCAD, Bluebeam, and Microsoft Office.
  • Familiarity with BIM standards, drawing production workflows, and quality assurance procedures.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Current registration with Professional Engineers Ontario, or a P.Eng. designation.
  • Experience with energy modelling software and SB-10 or Toronto Green Standard compliance pathways.
  • Experience with existing-building retrofits, system replacements, or mechanical condition assessments.
  • Experience with Toronto and GTA municipal approvals processes.
  • Familiarity with utility incentive programs such as Enbridge Savings by Design or IESO offerings.
  • Exposure to purpose-built rental, missing-middle, or multiplex housing typologies.
  • Graduate coursework or research in building energy, thermal systems, or fluid dynamics.

We weigh demonstrated ability, technical competence, project experience, and professional judgment far more heavily than where you trained or whose name is on your resume.

Skills and Personal Qualities
  • Detail-oriented: You catch the sizing error in your own schedule before a senior engineer does.
  • Analytical: You reason from first principles when the code clause does not squarely cover the condition in front of you.
  • Proactive: You identify what your projects need and act on it rather than waiting for direction.
  • Accountable: You stand behind your numbers, including the ones that turned out to be wrong.
  • Clear: You can explain a mechanical constraint to an architect, a contractor, and a client, and adjust the explanation for each.
  • Candid: You flag the limits of your knowledge and ask rather than assume, because guessing carries consequences in this work.
  • Coachable: You treat design review as a professional exchange and apply what you learn from it.
  • Collaborative: You work well with architects, consultants, and contractors, and you would rather solve the problem than win the email.
What We Offer
  • Direct exposure to the full project lifecycle, from design through construction and commissioning, rather than a single narrow phase.
  • Structured support toward your P.Eng., including supervised experience under licensed engineers and guidance on PEO experience record submissions.
  • A varied portfolio across residential, multiplex, mixed-use, commercial, and institutional work.
  • Integrated in-house architectural and structural support on every project.
  • A direct working relationship with senior engineering staff and the principals, with no layers to push through.
  • Competitive compensation aligned with experience.
  • Paid vacation and statutory holidays.
  • Support for professional development, licensure, and continuing education.
  • A clear path to grow with the firm as the engineering department expands.
