Job summary

The City of Markham is seeking an Aquatics Sport Development Supervisor to oversee a large part-time staff and deliver high-performance training and event services for clients in the 50M Pool and gymnasium at the Markham Pan Am Centre.

Reporting to the Sport Development Coordinator, you will manage the Lifesaving Club of Markham, support training needs of local aquatics clubs, mentor part-time staff, and contribute to the Centre's quality assurance and safety programs while working evenings and

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in recreation, sport administration, event management or related discipline.
  • One to three years of full-time supervisory experience in aquatics or a related field, preferably in a similar environment.
  • Experience in competitive event management is preferred.
  • Must hold current Lifesaving Society Awards in National Lifeguard, Standard First Aid with CPR C/Intermediate First Aid with CPR C and AED; ability to complete Lifesaving Society certifications.
  • Current Lifesaving Society Swim and Lifesaving Instructor certification, or ability to renew it, is preferred.
  • Current Lifesaving Society National Lifeguard Instructor and Examiner or ability to recertify.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as required.

Responsibilities

  • Administer and supervise aquatics services within a defined program portfolio.
  • Manage the full event lifecycle, including client intake and planning; build relationships with sport organizers.
  • Ensure facility safety per City of Markham policies and lifeguarding standards.
  • Recruit, hire, train, schedule and develop part-time staff and volunteers; oversee payroll and performance.
  • Assist with operating budgets and identify capital budget needs.
  • Promote customer service excellence with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Administer emergency procedures and lead staff during major emergencies.

Job Summary

Reporting to the Sport Development Coordinator, the Sport Development Supervisor - Aquatics will work as part of the Markham Pan Am Centre team responsible for the supervision of a large part-time staff complement and delivery of high-performance training and event services for new and existing clients in the 50M Pool and 36,000 sq ft gymnasium.

The Sport Development Supervisor – Aquatics will be assigned a program portfolio that includes the oversight of the Lifesaving Club of Markham and servicing the training and competitive requirements of local/regional aquatics clubs. This includes administration of programs while being an integral member of the Aquatics City-Wide functional team. This position will assist in leading the quality assurance program at the Markham Pan Am Centre. This position will also mentor, support, motivate and provide guidance on performance management of all part-time aquatic staff while maintaining positive relationships with fellow area staff, residents, community groups and clients.

Responsibilities
  • Administer and supervise aquatics services within a defined program portfolio at the Markham Pan Am Centre.
  • Manage the full event lifecycle, including client intake, logistical planning, and relationship management with sport organizers to support successful event execution.
  • Ensure facility safety and supervision in accordance with City of Markham policies, Ontario Public Pool Regulations, and applicable governing bodies, including the Lifesaving Society and Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA).
  • Recruit, hire, train, schedule, and develop part-time staff and volunteers; oversee payroll and performance management for part-time staff.
  • Assist with developing and monitoring operating budgets, including identifying capital budget needs.
  • Promote customer service excellence when working with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Administer facility emergency procedures and lead staff during major emergencies, including evacuations when required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • Post-secondary education, such as a college diploma or university degree, in recreation, sport administration, event management, or related discipline.
  • One to three years of full-time supervisory experience in aquatics or a related field, preferably in a similar environment.
  • Experience in competitive event management is preferred.
  • Must hold current Lifesaving Society Awards in: National Lifeguard, Standard First Aid with CPR C/Intermediate First Aid with CPR C and AED,
  • Must have ability to complete the Lifesaving Society’s Airway Management and Aquatic Supervisor Certifications
  • Current Lifesaving Society Swim and Lifesaving Instructor certification, or the ability to renew it, is preferred.
  • Current Lifesaving Society National Lifeguard Instructor and Examiner or ability to re-certify.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as required.
