Job summary

The YMCA of Northern Alberta is seeking an Aquatics Swim Instructor/Lifeguard to join Castle Downs Family YMCA in Edmonton. You will deliver safe, quality swim lessons, supervise pool activity, and maintain a welcoming environment for members and participants.

Responsibilities include following YMCA safety policies, preplanning lessons, tracking progress, and supporting new staff with onboarding. Required NL Pool, YMCA certifications, and First Aid/CPR-C.

Qualifications

• Minimum 16 years of age (16-17 years under supervision of 18+ year old lifeguard).
• Intermediate (Standard) First Aid & CPR-C.
• National Lifeguard Pool.
• YMCA Swim Instructor (YSI) and/or Lifesaving Instructor (LSI).
• YMCA will provide Oxygen Administration (O2) with 6 months of hire date.
• Must obtain National Lifeguard (NL) within first year of hire date.
• National Coaching certification (NCCP) are an asset.
• Able to obtain a Police Information Check with Vulnerable sector check.
• Well developed written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to create a positive and effective learning environment.

Responsibilities

• Maintains active surveillance of the pool area and is not distracted while guarding.
• Is a vigilant on-deck lifeguard – Role models and consistently applies safety rules, policies, and guidelines in the aquatics area.
• Performs aquatics facilities audits and all equipment checks (emergency, safety, program), on a regular basis ensuring standards are met and resolving deficiencies and issues.
• Uses off deck time efficiently to maintain cleanliness and safety of the aquatics area. Records completed tasks on the proper form.
• Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the Alberta health code.
• Ensures aquatics facility is safe by checking the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving.
• Assists in the on-boarding and training of new staff.
