Job summary

Variety Village in Scarborough, ON is seeking an Aquatic Program Assistant for an on-site, on-call/part-time role. You will support Swim Instructors, help with lesson prep, assist participants, and maintain a positive learning environment around the pool.

This position is ideal for youth aiming to develop leadership, communication, and instructional skills while gaining hands-on experience in an inclusive aquatic setting.

Qualifications

  • Minimum age 14 years old and legally eligible to work in Canada.
  • Bronze Cross certification required.
  • First Aid – CPR C certification is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Assist Swim Instructors with delivery of aquatic programs.
  • Support lesson preparation and equipment organization.
  • Assist participants with activities and skill development.
  • Contribute to a positive and welcoming learning environment for diverse abilities.
  • Encourage participant engagement and ensure safety following procedures.
  • Maintain a clean, safe pool deck and surrounding areas.
  • Assist with attendance tracking and program-related administrative tasks.

Key Details:

Job Title: Aquatic Program Assistant

Type: On-Call/Part-Time Contract.

Location: 3701 Danforth Avenue, Scarborough, ON M1N 2G2. This is a fully on-site position.

Salary: $18.00 per hour.

Deadline: Submission of Online Application Form and a scheduled group interview time must be completed no later than August 14th, 2026.

Reports to: Coordinator, Aquatics & Leadership Programs

It was founded in 1945, and the original mission of the charity was to build a school for boys with a disability who could not receive an education in the mainstream school system. The school was called Variety Village.

Variety Village operated as a school until it became a centre of para-sport excellence.

Since the 1970s, Variety athletes and coaches have represented Canada at every summer Paralympic games. Currently, Variety Village is a 170,000 square foot facility and operates as a fitness centre for the general community as well as offering programs, training and camps for children of all ages and abilities.

The Opportunity:

The Aquatic Program Assistant at Variety Village supports the delivery of safe, high-quality, and inclusive aquatic programming. Working alongside Swim Instructors and aquatic staff, this role assists with lesson preparation, participant support, class organization, and maintaining a positive learning environment.

This position is ideal for youth who are interested in developing leadership, communication, and instructional skills while gaining hands‑on experience in the aquatics field.

Key Areas of Responsibility:
  • Assist Swim Instructors with the delivery of safe, inclusive, and engaging aquatic programs.
  • Support lesson preparation, including setup and organization of equipment and program materials.
  • Assist participants with activities, transitions, and skill development under the direction of Swim Instructors.
  • Support instructors in creating a positive and welcoming learning environment for children, youth, and individuals of diverse abilities.
  • Encourage participant engagement and provide support to help participants feel comfortable and successful in the aquatic environment.
  • Promote participant safety by following aquatic policies, procedures, and instructor direction.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe pool deck and surrounding areas.
  • Assist with attendance tracking and other program-related administrative tasks as required.
  • Communicate participant concerns, observations, or incidents to the appropriate aquatic staff.
  • Participate in aquatic staff training, in‑service sessions, and ongoing development opportunities.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of and follow Variety Village aquatic emergency procedures.
  • Perform other related aquatic duties as assigned.
Key Competencies:
  • Minimum age of 14 years old and legally eligible to work in Canada.
  • Current Bronze Cross certification required.
  • Valid Standard First Aid – CPR C, AED, and Airway Management certification is considered an asset.
  • Demonstrates responsibility, initiative, reliability, and a willingness to learn.
  • Ability to work with children, youth, and individuals with disabilities in an inclusive and supportive environment.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Interest in pursuing future aquatic certifications, including Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor and Lifesaving Instructor certifications, is encouraged.
  • Ability to work a seasonal schedule, including evenings and weekends as required.

Pay: $18.00 per hour
