Job summary

The City of Edmonton is seeking enthusiastic Aquatic Instructors to join our Community and Recreation Facilities team. You will provide high-quality swimming instruction to patrons of all ages and abilities, promoting water safety and confidence in the pool environment.

This ongoing part-time role requires certification and the ability to work evenings and weekends, with a strong commitment to inclusive community service and safety in our aquatic facilities.

Qualifications

• Completion of Grade 9 or higher.
• Current Lifesaving Society SFL, LSI, SA, and Bronze Cross or NL.
• Current IFA (First Aid & CPR-C/AED) certification.

Are you a skilled swimmer with a passion for teaching and water safety? The City of Edmonton is looking for enthusiastic Aquatic Instructors to join our Community and Recreation Facilities team!

In this role, you will provide high-quality swimming instruction to patrons of all ages and abilities, from preschoolers to seniors. You will play a vital role in our community by helping residents develop essential life skills while ensuring a safe and positive environment in our leisure centers. What will you do?

• Instruct all Lifesaving Society levels of swimming for various age groups and abilities
• Teach swimming techniques, strokes, and water safety rules effectively
• Assess student progress and adapt teaching programs to meet individual needs
• Monitor students closely to prevent accidents and ensure a safe learning environment
• Prepare lesson plans, progress cards, and evaluation sheets for each session
• Complete administrative tasks, including tracking attendance and providing helpful feedback to students and parents
• Maintain professional communication with supervisors, peers, and community members
• Identify and correct swimming techniques to help students enhance their abilities

Qualifications

• Completion of Grade 9
• Possession of a current Lifesaving Society Swim for Life Award (SFL)
• Possession of a current Lifesaving Society Lifesaving Instructor Award (LSI)
• Possession of a current Lifesaving Society SwimAbilities Award (SA)
• Possession of a current Lifesaving Society Bronze Cross Award or Lifesaving Society National Lifeguard Award (BC or NL)
• Possession of a current Government of Alberta workplace approved Intermediate First Aid & CPR-C/AED (IFA)

Assets

• National Lifeguard is an asset
• Experience working with diverse populations, with a specific focus on Indigenous peoples
• Previous experience in recreation facility operations or cultural attraction environments

Skills required for success

• Strong knowledge of planning, teaching, and evaluating swimming and water safety lessons
• Excellent customer service and communication skills to interact with students and their families
• Effective behavior management skills and the ability to put people at ease
• Proven creativity, patience, and perseverance when teaching diverse learners

Conditions of Employment

• Hire is dependent on Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector Check satisfactory to the City of Edmonton, and there may be a cost associated with this requirement
• Must maintain valid required certifications as a condition of ongoing employment

Work Environment

• Work is performed in an aquatic environment, which may involve varying temperatures, humidity, and noise
• Positions may involve shift work, including split shifts
• Physical requirements include standing, kneeling, and lifting up to 20 lbs
• Due to the nature of this work, this position is not eligible for a hybrid work arrangement
• Availability to work evenings and weekends is required
• This is a public-facing role and requires engagement and interaction with diverse people from various backgrounds with different needs, expectations and emotional states
