Job summary

The University of Calgary is seeking two full-time Application Support Analysts for approximately 24 months within Information Technologies. You will join the Application Web Services group to support onboarding and ongoing maintenance of software used across campus.

Ideal candidates have a degree in Computer Science, 3–5 years of relevant experience, and strong problem solving and communication skills. Experience with COTS, ServiceNow, ITIL, and Windows/Linux environments is an asset.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary degree in Computer Science or related field.
  • 3–5 years of relevant experience.
  • Experience with a variety of commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) software and vendors.
  • Strong problem solving and troubleshooting abilities.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to learn new products, systems, applications, and technologies quickly.
  • Experience with ServiceNow and ITIL is an asset.
  • Knowledge of Windows Server, RHEL, Apache, IIS; networking, firewalls, SSL; Active Directory/Entra, Microsoft 365 is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Review systems to determine update/patch requirements to resolve vulnerabilities or unsupported system versions.
  • Collaborate with IT teams, vendors and system owners to determine best approach to update the system.
  • Plan and execute system updates with stakeholders.
  • Test updates.
  • Develop tools to assist with update efficiency and consistency.
  • Develop standards and processes for updates to ensure consistency.
  • Development of template strategies and quality control reviews.
  • Manage risk and issues log; escalate items as needed.
  • Regular reviews of risk and issue logs to close overdue items.

Description

The Information Technologies is currently seeking Two (2) Full-time Limited Term Application Support Analyst for approximately 24 months.

This position is part of the Application Web Services group within Information Technologies and reports to the Team Lead, Application Web Services. The group is responsible for supporting the onboarding and ongoing maintenance of software used by the University of Calgary.

The role will work with various teams within IT and other departments to ensure systems remain current and are patched against security vulnerabilities. The position will also support the development of a standard process to ensure systems are updated consistently and in a timely manner.

Application Web Services supports a broad range of software, systems, and platforms, including web applications, scheduling systems, and sensor systems. This role requires a strong understanding of how modern hosted software operates, and experience with various platforms and commercial off-the-shelf solutions is considered an asset. The role will work with various teams within IT and other departments to ensure systems remain current and are patched against security vulnerabilities. The position will also support the development of a standard process to ensure systems are updated consistently and in a timely manner.

Summary of Key Responsibilities
Technical / System Support
  • Review various system to determine update, patching and/or system change requirements to resolve vulnerabilities or unsupported system versions.

  • Test updates.
  • Develop tools as required to assist with update efficiency and consistency.

Quality Management
  • Development template strategies where possible.
  • Development of quality control reviews are planned and executed.
Risk and Issues Management
  • Manage risk and issues log.
  • Risks and issues are escalated for management and/or resolution if they are outstanding longer than expected.
  • Regular periodic reviews of risk and issue logs are conducted to close or escape overdue items.
Qualifications / Requirements
  • Completed a post-secondary degree in Computer Science or a related field.
  • 3-5 years of relevant experience.
  • Proven experience working with a variety of COTS and Vendors.
  • Proficient at problem solving and troubleshooting.
  • Highly professional team player with strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Exceptional communication (verbal and written). Communicate effectively with business and IT professionals at all levels.
  • Diplomatic, collaborative, flexible, analytical, critical thinker, customer service oriented, self-starter, and facilitator.
  • Ability to quickly learn about new products, systems, applications and technologies.
  • Experience with Software development an asset.
  • Knowledge of ServiceNow an asset.
  • Knowledge of ITIL an asset.
  • Technology Specific Qualifications:
    • Proven experience with Window server and RHEL OS
    • Experience with Apache and IIS
    • Experience with developing scripts is an asset
    • Knowledge of networking, firewall, proxies, certificate, SSL
    • Knowledge of Active Directory, Entra, Microsoft 365 interface services is an asset
