Job summary

Insight Global is seeking an Application Modernization Specialist to support a large modernization project for a leading higher education client. The role is hands-on and centers on assessing, upgrading, and refactoring a legacy Java 8/Angular application, with emphasis on performance, debt, and service extraction.

The candidate will apply Spring/Spring Boot, REST APIs, JPA/Hibernate, and SQL, while leveraging Azure, Docker/Kubernetes, and CI/CD to deliver scalable results.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of Java development experience.
• Experience modernizing legacy Java 8 applications to newer Java versions.
• Strong Angular and AngularJS experience, including migrations.
• Experience breaking apart/refactoring monolithic applications and extracting services.
• Strong Spring/Spring Boot, REST API, JPA/Hibernate, and SQL experience.
• Experience diagnosing application performance issues using profiling, tracing, SQL analysis, and load testing.
• Experience with Db2 or similar relational databases.
• Experience conducting code/technical debt assessments and creating modernization recommendations.
• Strong understanding of secure coding and OWASP.
• Azure experience.
• Docker/Kubernetes and CI/CD.
• SonarQube or similar code analysis tools.
• Experience with IBM environments.
• Higher education, student registration, or payment system experience.

Responsibilities

• Assess and modernize a legacy Java/Angular application with a focus on performance, debt, and upgrade opportunities.
• Identify performance issues, technical debt, and modernization opportunities.
• Refactor monolithic components into service-oriented architectures and extract APIs where appropriate.
• Leverage Spring/Spring Boot, REST, JPA/Hibernate, and SQL to implement improvements.
• Ensure secure coding practices in line with OWASP guidelines.
