Job summary

Handling Specialty Manufacturing Ltd. in Grimsby/Hamilton Ontario is seeking an Applications Engineer to join a team that designs and develops custom mechanical solutions across industries such as aerospace, automotive, and entertainment.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in mechanical or electrical engineering is preferred.
  • Minimum two years of mechanical/electrical engineering experience.
  • Experience estimating project costs is an asset.
  • Proficient with SolidWorks.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.

Responsibilities

  • Develop complex mechanical equipment and components to meet customer needs.
  • Prepare cost estimates for sales proposals, including hours and material costs.
  • Maintain project estimates and design history documents.
  • Support Sales with technical guidance.
  • Review specs and customer documents, provide clarifications.
  • Participate in proposal meetings and reviews.
  • Assist team with document publishing and formatting.
  • Perform calculations in Excel to size mechanical systems.
  • Create preliminary concepts in SolidWorks for customer communication.

Job Opportunity: Application Engineer
Reports To: Applications Engineer ManagerLocation: Grimsby/Hamilton Ontario – 100% onsite.

Job Summary:

The Applications Engineer will work with a team that designs and develops custom mechanical solutions for customers, including: advanced manufacturing, aerospace, automotive, entertainment, rail transit, and power generation.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Work as part of a team developing complex mechanical equipment, tooling, and components to meet customer requirements.
  • Develop cost estimates for sales proposals, estimating the required production hours and material costs required to develop and produce custom equipment.
  • Maintain applications documents, such as: Project Estimates, Costing Data, Design and Work History, Historical Inflation Data, etc.
  • Maintaining ongoing communication with the Sales Team and assisting the sales staff with technical support.
  • Reviewing specifications and customer-supplied documentation, providing comments, clarifications, and exceptions as needed.
  • Participating in all required meetings and reviews during the proposal preparation process
  • Assisting other members of the application engineering team with document publishing/formatting as needed
  • Perform calculations, using Excel, required to specify mechanical systems, such as motors, steel beams, hydraulic power units, linear actuators, etc.
  • Design and detail preliminary concepts in SolidWorks to communicate engineering solutions to the customer.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Solid understanding of mechanical and/or electrical systems design and integration.
  • Must be able to work independently and within a team environment.
  • Ability to work cross-functionally with design, manufacturing, and sales teams.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong analytical and mathematical skills with a focus on problem-solving.
  • Exceptional organizational skills with the ability to manage time effectively and prioritize multiple tasks.
  • Clear, concise communication and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated judgment and adaptability in shifting priorities or evolving project requirements.
Education and Experience:
  • Relevant Post Secondary Education; Mechanical or Electrical Engineering an asset.
  • Minimum Two (2) years’ experience in mechanical/electrical engineering or a related field.
  • Experience in estimating project costs is an asset
  • Experience in developing and presenting presentations.
  • Must have experience using SolidWorks.
Working Conditions
  • Ability to travel to manufacturing sites within Canada
