Job summary

A leading research organization in Vancouver is seeking an Animal Technician to handle and care for animals, perform surgeries, and conduct various technical duties. The role is part-time and requires a post-secondary diploma in animal health technology or a B.Sc in animal science along with hands-on experience in an animal facility. Qualifications

  • 2 years’ experience working hands on in an animal facility or equivalent training.
  • CALAS certification (RLAT) preferred.
  • Experience with xenograft studies is an asset.
  • Exceptional CCAC and AAALAC compliance knowledge.
  • Experience in pharmaceutical contract research and GLP compliance.

Responsibilities

  • Perform animal handling and minor surgeries.
  • Conduct blood collection techniques.
  • Manage general husbandry and animal monitoring.
  • Perform drug dosage calculations and data entry.
  • Ensure supplies are ordered as required.

Base pay range

$20.00/hr - $22.00/hr

Reports to: Associate Director Pharmacology

Frontage Laboratories is Exton, PA headquartered Contract Research Organization (CRO) and Contract Development and Manufacturing Organization (CDMO). We operate 26 state‑of‑the‑art facilities across the USA, Canada, China and Europe. Frontage is dedicated to accelerating the development of innovative therapies by providing a broad range of science‑driven and quality‑focused services including drug discovery, DMPK, preclinical safety & toxicology, formulation development and manufacturing, analytical, clinical trials, bioanalytical, and central labs. We have enabled biotechnology companies and leading pharmaceutical companies of varying sizes to advance a myriad of molecules through development and regulatory submissions, globally.

Our Canadian operations include two sites – one located in Vancouver, BC and the other in Toronto. Frontage Canada (formerly BRI), Vancouver site has been in operation for over 25 years with service offerings in regulated and non-regulated bioanalytical (platforms including LC/MS/MS and MSD for small and large molecules analyses), In‑vitro / In‑vivo Drug Metabolism & Pharmacokinetics and pharmacology. This operation is projected to grow significantly in coming years to meet the demands of biotech and pharmaceutical companies in the Pacific Northwest region. Our facility is accredited by AAALAC and conforms to GLP standards.

Skills and Qualifications
  • Requires post‑secondary diploma in animal health technology or a B.Sc in animal science plus 2‑years’ experience working hands on in an animal facility, and/or equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • CALAS certification (RLAT) preferred.
  • Ability to perform skilled technical duties but not limited to animal handling, restraint, manipulations (SQ, PO, IV, IP) and minor surgeries in rodents.
  • Experience with xenograft studies is an asset.
  • Exceptional CCAC and AAALAC compliance knowledge.
  • Experience in pharmaceutical contract research and GLP compliance knowledge is an asset.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong planning, organization and leadership abilities.
  • Competent and self‑motivated individual able to work independently.
  • Excellent logical thinking and problem‑solving skills.
  • Ability to work extended hours beyond normal work schedule to include, but not limited to, evenings, weekends, holidays, extended shifts and/or extra shifts, sometimes on short notice.
  • Ability to work under specific time constraints.
  • Experience in pharmaceutical contract research and GLP compliance knowledge will be an asset but not essential.
Job Responsibilities
  • Performs skilled technical duties, animal handling, restraint and manipulations, (SQ. PO. IV. IP. Tumor volume measurements) and minor surgeries.
  • Perform blood collection techniques (tail nicks, saphenous bleeds, jugular vein collections, cardiac punctures).
  • Perform tissue collection procedures and euthanasia.
  • Performs general husbandry and assumes responsibility for animal care and monitoring.
  • Performs drug dosage calculations and serial dilutions.
  • Enters data and creates Excel spreadsheets specific to each study.
  • Ensures supplies, including animal food, bedding and other essential supplies are ordered as required.
  • Assumes responsibility for all study monitoring and the completion of score sheets, as required.
  • Ensures that all study related documentation is completed and archived as required.
  • Follows safety policies and procedures.
  • Ability to lift to 35 lbs.
