Role

Analyst, Client & Business Intelligence (Toronto office). This role supports the Client & Business Development department by gathering company, market, and competitive intelligence, advising lawyers and management on strategy, data analysis, and research initiatives.

Responsibilities
  • Provide reports for client development pursuits, including sourcing research materials, coordinating relationship intelligence (CRM & billing), summarizing findings, and presenting materials to stakeholders such as lawyers and colleagues.
  • Assist the CBD team with target/prospect identification based on criteria such as public filings, geographic and industry segmentation, market trends, and prior counsel relationships.
  • Support national CBD initiatives: research and analysis for Industry Group business plans, the Key Client Program, individual lawyer business plans, win strategies, and responses to RFPs.
  • Provide proactive insights and circulate developments in various industry sectors.
  • Maintain curiosity and knowledge by reviewing newsfeeds, participating in industry and client meetings, and collaborating with colleagues.
  • Conduct competitive market scans, examining competitor practice areas, composition, marketing, activity, and resources within specific practice areas or jurisdictions.
  • Analyze competitor data such as industry markets, market‑sizing, practice names, number of lawyers per practice, recent deals, client resources, firm rankings, and relevant associations.
  • Identify and highlight trends or potential conflicts uncovered during research.
  • Assist with data analysis of social media publications.
  • Prepare ad hoc reports by industry, region, or office location.
  • Advise the CBD team on deals linked to the mandate database, ensuring accurate capture of publicly available information.
  • Maintain knowledge‑management resources and support client data quality working with the CRM team to update contacts and ensure proper segmentation (c‑suite, corporate counsel, etc.).
  • Identify opportunities for continuous improvement, develop and monitor implementation plans, and recommend firm‑approved technologies and platforms.
  • Take a creative outlook to expand access to departmental resources and intelligence.
Qualifications
  • 3+ years of experience in a research environment and a post‑secondary degree in a relevant field.
  • Familiarity with business and corporate transactional research tools (Bloomberg, CapitalIQ, Mergermarket, PitchBook, etc.).
  • Intermediate or advanced skill using AI research tools (ChatGPT, Tableau, Co‑Pilot) and technical aptitude to learn additional tools.
  • Intermediate or advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and visualization tools such as PowerBI.
  • Strong curiosity, drive to expand knowledge, and ability to provide clear insights.
  • Willingness to work with stakeholders to scope and refine outcomes, shape efficient research processes, and prioritize work across competing priorities.
  • Analytical, creative, and critical thinking skills to connect themes and identify stakeholder opportunities.
  • Team player with positive work ethic, strong interpersonal skills, and ability to develop cross‑functional relationships.
  • Highly organized, detail‑oriented, self‑motivated, and able to manage tasks with minimal supervision.
