OVERVIEW

The Anaesthesia Assistant is responsible and accountable for the provision of advanced respiratory care as established by the College of Respiratory Therapists of Ontario and the standards of respiratory care of this hospital. As an advanced practitioner, the Anaesthesia Assistant provides clinical and technical assistance in the care of the stable surgical patient during general, regional, or local anesthesia.

The Anaesthesia Assistant provides constant assessment and evaluative monitoring of the depth of anesthesia under the direct supervision of the Anesthesiologist and with the use of medical directives, as applicable. The Anaesthesia Assistant is also an integral member of the Allied Health team with accountabilities for professional practice, education, and research.

SALARY RATE

Starting rate is $48.73/hour. As a new employee, you may be eligible for Credit for Experience to progress your salary on the wage scale for your position, in accordance with the collective agreement relevant to your position.

EDUCATION

  1. Graduation from an accredited Respiratory Therapy program, Nursing program, or recognized equivalent is required.
  2. Current license with the College of Respiratory Therapy of Ontario (CRTO) or College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) is required.
  3. Completion of accredited Anesthesia Assistant Advanced Program is required.
  4. Certified in BCLS is required.
  5. Certified in ACLS is preferred.

QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Minimum 5 years experience in a Critical Care setting.
  2. Minimum 2 years recent Operating Room experience preferred.
  3. Minimum 1-2 years experience in an Anesthesia Assistant role preferred.
  4. Demonstrated experience and proficiency in the following skills:
    1. Airway Management / Intubation / LMA insertion
    2. Management of difficult airways, using adjunctive devices and specialty devices
    3. Peripheral IV insertion
    4. Arterial Line insertion
    5. Ophthalmology conscious sedation
    6. Regional blocks
    7. Management and troubleshooting of various types of anesthesia gas machines
    8. Point of care testing
  5. Demonstrated ability to respond to expected, urgent, and emergent events.
  6. Excellent organizational, communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
  7. Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively with an interdisciplinary team to plan, deliver, and evaluate care.
  8. Participate in teaching and presentation of in-service programs as required.
  9. Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team in planning, delivering, and evaluating service delivery through participation on committees and initiatives.
  10. Participate in trials, evaluations, and research projects as required.
  11. Experience with cell salvage is an asset.
  12. Demonstrated commitment to continuous learning.
  13. Good work and attendance record required.
  14. Maintains records and workload statistics.
  15. Maintain a healthy and safe work environment.
