Job description

The CRNA is responsible for the pre-operative, intra-operative, and immediate post-operative care of patients requiring anesthesia for surgical, medical, therapeutic, or diagnostic procedures. This includes:

1. Pre-operative assessments
2. Development of anesthetic care plans
3. Assembly and care of specialized equipment
4. Application, insertion, and interpretation of data from anesthetic monitors
5. Airway management
6. Delivery of general, regional anesthesia, and monitored anesthetic care
7. Induction, maintenance, and emergence from anesthesia
8. Post-operative patient care and assessments in collaboration with a physician from the Department of Anesthesiology

These services are provided in our 16 main operating rooms.

Clinical Responsibilities:

The following clinical responsibilities should be demonstrated by the individual, with additional responsibilities added as education and experience grow:

• Pre-anesthesia assessment
• Requesting laboratory/diagnostic studies
• Pre-anesthetic medication administration
• Management of general anesthesia and adjuvant drugs
• Monitoring regional anesthesia
• Administering sedation techniques
• Managing cardiopulmonary resuscitation
• Placement and monitoring of invasive and non-invasive devices
• Airway management techniques
• Mechanical ventilation and oxygen therapy
• Fluid, electrolyte, and acid-base management
• Blood, blood products, and plasma expanders administration
• Peripheral intravenous and arterial catheter placement
• Acute and chronic pain management
• Medication selection, administration, and reconciliation in accordance with policies
• Post-anesthesia care and discharge
• Seeking physician guidance based on patient condition
• Adherence to I.C.A.R.E Standards

Working Conditions:

Care is provided in the main operating rooms and various 'Out of OR' locations such as Radiology, Cardiac Cath Lab, CT, MRI, MRT, Endoscopy, and Angiography, often in geographically distant areas. These environments involve various electrical, mechanical, gas-driven, radiation, and laser-emitting equipment. Conditions may vary from warm, cold, dimly lit, crowded to spacious and well-lit settings.

Basic Qualifications:

• State licensure as a registered professional nurse, complying with Massachusetts regulations for advanced practice in nurse anesthesia
• Graduation from an accredited Nurse Anesthesia program
• Certification by the Council on Certification or recertification by the Council on Recertification
• Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications
