AGO Art Camp, Health & Wellness Lead Counsellor
Temporary Full-Time
(35 hours per week; Additional hours starting at 7:30 AM and ending at 6:00 PM will be assigned on a rotational basis)
Hourly rate: $19.25
Start Date: May 14, 2025
End Date: September 05, 2025

Located in Toronto, the Art Gallery of Ontario (“the AGO”) is one of the largest art museums in North America, with a collection of close to 100,000 works. At AGO Art Camp, we believe in fostering creativity and imagination in young artists. As part of the renowned Art Gallery of Ontario, we provide a unique and enriching experience for campers to explore their artistic talents while enjoying the fun of summer camp and we need great people to help us accomplish this!

We are currently seeking a Temporary Full-Time, AGO Art Camp Health & Wellness Lead Counsellor to join our Education & Programming team for the AGO’s Summer Art Camp. Under the direction of the Manager, Studio Programming & Learning, the incumbent will research and develop inclusion resource materials and recreational children’s activities and games for counsellors to implement for children with varying abilities and needs. They will assist counsellors with their programming and planning, with a focus on camper wellness and safety and creating an inclusive environment for all. They will review all incoming campers’ medical and behavioural needs and coordinates care under the supervision of the Manager, Studio Programming & Learning. The Health & Wellness Lead Counsellor will be responsible for monitoring camper, volunteer and counsellor safety and well-being. They will assist with the coordination of counsellor and volunteer placements and lead volunteer evaluations.
Under the direction of the Manager, Studio Programming & Learning, the Health & Wellness Lead Counsellor is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the camp program including staff, volunteer and camper wellness and safety. They will provide excellent front line customer service (in-person, by phone and email), liaising with parents/guardians, campers, AGO staff, volunteers and patrons of the gallery. They will cover for camp counsellor absences and fellow lead staff absences as required. They will plan and lead activities in collaboration with the Manager, fellow lead staff, counsellors and volunteers. They will support camp staff and volunteers indoors and outdoors as needed to run programming, promote well-being and maintain a safe camp environment at all times.
The Health & Wellness Lead Counsellor will mentor counsellors and volunteers throughout the summer, demonstrating best practices in behavioural management, customer service, program planning and delivery and health and safety awareness, and administrative processes. Under the supervision of the Manager, the Health & Wellness Lead Counsellor implements a comprehensive counsellor and volunteer training program for the AGO Art Camp. They will write an end of summer report, summarizing all recommendations and suggestions for the following summer.

The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications, skills, and experience:
  1. Enrolled in a secondary or post-secondary program in visual arts, education, physical education, health and recreation or other appropriate areas of study (or within 24 months of graduation).
  2. Experience in a health-related program (Nursing, Social Work etc.) is an asset.
  3. Experience in child behaviour management and supervising groups of children (aged 5-13) in an indoor/outdoor camp and/or educational environment.
  4. Experience in developing and leading activities for children in both small and large groups.
  5. Experience working with children with exceptionalities or special needs.
  6. Enjoys working with children and youth.
  7. Strong computer skills (word processing, data processing) including familiarity with Excel, Word and Outlook.
  8. Excellent organizational and time management skills and attention to detail.
  9. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  10. Excellent problem solving and team-building and training skills.
  11. Strong interest in the visual arts.
  12. Standard First Aid CPR/AED Level C is required before start of employment.
