Addiction and Mental Health Worker, Peer Support Worker - Hubs

Direct Service - (OPSEU)


Part-Time, Contract (Ending: March 31, 2028) *Two Positions Available*

The London HART Hub is a low barrier recovery-oriented space that aims to support individuals experiencing homelessness with mental health and addiction needs to improve their health and wellbeing. HART Hubs provide access to high-quality, evidence-informed care that is respectful, trauma-informed, culturally appropriate, and compassionate. They connect individuals with a continuum of care tailored to their needs, including transitional supportive housing where individuals can access safety, basic needs, healthcare, and other mental health and addiction services under one location.


The Addiction and Mental Health Worker, Peer Support Worker, performs duties aligned with psychosocial rehabilitation principles, a recovery-oriented practice, and an evidence-based peer support model. Working as part of a multidisciplinary team within the London HART Hub program, the Peer Support Worker utilizes their lived experience of mental illness, homelessness, and/or addictions to support individuals in their recovery journeys. Responsibilities include community inclusion, service engagement, and wellness promotion through individual support and group facilitation.

WHAT WE'RE OFFERING:


  • Starting rate is $27.14/hour (Level 1 – Direct Service), with a wage differential based on regulation ($30.01/hour for regulated Level 1). Successful candidates registered with professional colleges (e.g., OCSWSSW, CNO, COTO, CRPO, CPSO, or CPO) will receive the wage differential. External applicants start at Level 1, with progression up to Level 8 ($34.41 non-regulated, $37.26 regulated). Internal applicants' grid level placement follows the Collective Agreement.

  • Work Schedule: Two contracts available—60 hours bi-weekly (rotating days/afternoons), 50 hours bi-weekly (rotating days/afternoons).

  • Benefits: 9% in lieu of benefits

  • Pension Plan: Immediate eligibility for optional enrollment in HOOPP

HOW YOU WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE:


Wellness & Prevention:

  • Utilize personal lived experience to support resilience-building among participants
  • Model effective coping and self-help strategies based on recovery principles
  • Facilitate a strengths-based, trauma-informed approach emphasizing safety, respect, hope, and empowerment
  • Lead social, support, and life skills groups based on peer needs
  • Practice core peer support principles: support, self-awareness, self-responsibility, and self-care
  • Foster peer-to-peer relationships and support relapse and overdose prevention
  • Assist peers with accessing services and supports for successful community transition
  • Support community outings to promote confidence and social inclusion
  • Develop and facilitate relevant group programming

Assessment & Goal Planning:

  • Support wellness planning to achieve self-sufficiency and community inclusion
  • Provide empathetic listening and peer encouragement
  • Explore community and clinical connection options with peers
  • Encourage peer ideas and projects, respecting diversity
  • Use critical thinking and collaboration to co-create solutions

Communication, Documentation & Decision-Making:

  • Document interactions concisely in peer health records
  • Communicate progress effectively with team members
  • Maintain professional boundaries and ensure policy compliance
  • Stay informed on peer support practices and evidence-based methods

Team Work:

  • Recognize knowledge limits and refer to clinical expertise when needed
  • Use positive, non-stigmatizing language
  • Facilitate empowerment and address barriers related to mental health, addictions, and homelessness
  • Connect peers to community resources using experiential knowledge
  • Contribute to stakeholder awareness of peer support's importance
  • Participate in professional development and team activities
  • Support additional HUB sites as required

WHAT YOU'LL NEED TO APPLY:


Police Vulnerable Sector Check: Must be recent (within six months). London residents are encouraged to apply early due to processing times.


Qualifications:

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent (proof required)
  • Lived experience of mental illness, addictions, or homelessness
  • Ability to model wellness and handle personal mental health/addictions concerns
  • Current PVSC
  • Reliable attendance

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Peer support training/certification (e.g., Peer Support Canada, PeerWorks)
  • First Aid/CPR
  • Knowledge of health systems and community resources
  • Experience as a Peer Supporter
  • Conflict resolution skills
  • Bilingual in both official languages (preferred)
