Job summary

St. Joseph’s Health System in Hamilton seeks a Registered Nurse for the Acute Mental Health Unit (R1) at West 5th Campus.

You will provide person-centred, evidence-based care to patients with acute mental illness, complete assessments, and coordinate therapeutic interventions within an inter-professional team. The role includes potential rotation to charge nurse duties over a 1–2 year period, offering leadership experience.

Qualifications

• Current nursing registration in Ontario.
• CPMHN(c) certification preferred or to complete within 5 years of hire.
• CPI crisis prevention training is required.
• Minimum of 1 year of recent mental health nursing experience with expertise in caring for patients with serious mental illness.
• Knowledge of Mental Health Act, Consent and Capacity, and related legislation.
• Knowledge of documentation standards, privacy laws and health record management.
• Knowledge of assessment and management of co-morbid medical disorders and Mental Status Examinations.
• Knowledge of patient counseling and group skills (e.g., DBT, MI, IPT, CBT, Behavioral Activation).
• Knowledge of risk assessment, trauma-informed care and alternatives to seclusion and restraint.

Responsibilities

• Provide holistic, evidence-based nursing care for patients with acute mental illness.
• Complete assessments and plan/organize treatment and interventions.
• Document and evaluate care; lead in inter-professional teams.
• Possibility to rotate as charge nurse for leadership experience.
