Job description

Overview

The Accounting Supervisor - Societies is responsible for providing essential financial information and internal controls related to the Societies, Orientation, and Student Refugee Program funds. The role ensures the integrity of financial processes across 10+ Societies, aligning with GAAP and WUSA policies. Reporting to the Financial Officer, this position collaborates closely with the Financial Analyst - General Fund.

Responsibilities

  • Manage financial performance and internal controls for Societies, Orientation, and Student Refugee Program funds.
  • Lead the preparation of financial statements, budgets, and year-end reports.
  • Prepare and analyze monthly financial reports for each Society, discussing results with Society representatives.
  • Oversee inventory tracking, capital asset accounting, and internal controls, ensuring compliance and audit readiness.
  • Maintain accurate records, monitor expenditures, and ensure compliance with financial obligations and policies.
  • Identify and implement improvements in internal controls and financial processes.
  • Coordinate external audits and serve as the primary contact for financial matters related to Societies.

Financial Strategy and Planning

  • Provide financial analysis and support for long-term planning and budgeting.
  • Prepare reports on financial stability and operational issues for each Society.
  • Work with Society executives to review budgets and financial health.
  • Communicate complex accounting information clearly to stakeholders with varying levels of expertise.
  • Participate in cross-functional projects, offering technical expertise and leadership.

Leadership and Professional Development

  • Supervise daily team activities, manage performance, and foster professional growth.
  • Promote training opportunities and maintain current knowledge of accounting standards and policies.
  • Participate in university committees and special initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary degree in accounting or related field; CPA or actively pursuing CPA preferred.
  • Significant experience in accounting/finance, including financial statement preparation.
  • Strong organizational, judgment, and communication skills.
  • Experience managing staff and working in a computerized accounting environment, preferably in not-for-profit settings.
  • Knowledge of GAAP, CRA regulations, and non-profit accounting practices.
