The Accounting Manager is responsible for the Company's corporate financial reporting, compliance, and oversight of core accounting operations. This role reviews and reconciles monthly reporting packages received from third-party property managers, supervises the Company's two Staff Accountants and a Senior Accountant, supports quarterly financial reporting to the Board of Directors, and assists with tax compliance and external audit requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare financial statements and supporting schedules for quarterly Board of Directors reporting packages.
- Support the VP of Accounting and external auditors with the preparation and coordination of the annual financial statement audit.
- Prepare account reconciliations, analyses, and supporting workpapers required for financial reporting and audit purposes.
- Assist with technical accounting research and memo preparation for complex or non-routine transactions.
Tax & Regulatory Compliance
- Assist with the preparation and filing of quarterly HST returns.
- Support preparation of annual corporate tax returns, partnership returns, and T5013 slips, working with external tax advisors as needed.
- Monitor compliance deadlines and maintain supporting documentation for all tax filings.
- Review, reconcile, and record monthly reporting packages received from third-party property managers for the Company's residential and commercial rental portfolio.
- Verify supporting documentation and investigate variances or discrepancies directly with property managers.
- Ensure timely and accurate recording of rental operations activity in Yardi Voyager.
Corporate Accounting Operations & Team Supervision
- Prepare and issue monthly corporate and intercompany invoicing
- Supervise and review the work of two Staff Accountants responsible for accounts payable, accounts receivable, credit card expense reporting, and intercompany/bank reconciliations.
- Review intercompany balances and bank reconciliations prepared by staff accountants for accuracy and completeness.
- Support the Financial Controller in developing and improving accounting processes, controls, and documentation.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance required.
- Minimum 5 years of accounting experience; public accounting (audit) background strongly preferred, with exposure to real estate clients an asset.
- Experience with financial statement preparation, audit support, and technical accounting research.
- Knowledge of Canadian tax compliance (HST, corporate and partnership returns, T5013) an asset.
- Experience with Yardi Voyager or similar real estate accounting software an asset.
- Strong Excel skills processing of large volumes of data for reconciliations, reporting and modeling.
- Prior supervisory or file-review experience preferred.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
- High degree of accuracy, professional skepticism, and attention to detail.
