Job summary

Staples Canada in Richmond Hill is seeking a detail‑oriented finance professional to own month‑end closing activities, prepare journal entries, and generate insightful financial reports. You will perform account reconciliations, investigate variances, and provide analyses and commentary on monthly, quarterly, and annual results to support management decisions.

This role blends hands‑on accounting with process improvement.

Qualifications

• University degree or equivalent in accounting, business, finance or a related field.
• Professional accounting designation (Canadian CPA is an asset) or working towards a designation.
• Knowledge of financial reporting.
• Knowledge and understanding of financial systems. Experience with Oracle is an asset.
• Strong / advanced Excel skills.
• 1+ years of finance or related experience is required.

Responsibilities

• Perform month end closing activities such as analyses, journal entries and generation of reports.
• Prepare account reconciliations and resolve issues and unreconciled differences.
• Provide meaningful analysis, in-depth review and commentary on monthly/quarterly/annual financials and comparisons to prior periods for areas assigned.
• Provide supplementary and ad-hoc reporting / analysis as required.
• Keep team appraised of unexpected or uncontrollable circumstances that may impact reporting timelines.
• Identify and execute process improvements for existing month end activities and reconciliations.
• Partner with various individuals within finance to improve controls and efficiency.
• Support and liaise with the external auditors in their execution of the audits.
• Evaluate the existing month-end, quarter-end and year-end processes and propose improvements that result in a more efficient and effective close process.

• Office environment - Hybrid, with 4 days onsite in Richmond Hill, subject to the hybrid policy.
