About The Accessible Learning Services Department At Humber

The Accessible Learning Services (ALS) department is guided by the social model of disability, which focuses on removing physical, social, and attitudinal barriers in the learning environment. It prioritizes learner-centered approaches and promotes inclusive, collaborative spaces where all students, especially those with disabilities, are empowered to participate fully. The department actively works to reduce barriers, ensure clear communication, and facilitate equitable access to services. Through this model, the department fosters a proactive and empowering relationship with students, advocating for an inclusive educational experience.

ALS is located in the Student Wellness and Accessibility Centre (SWAC) offices which are open Monday to Friday, from 8:30 AM to 6:30 PM to meet the needs of our diverse student body.

About The Accessible Learning Coordinator Role

The Accessible Learning Coordinator (ALC) acts as an integral collaborator within the broader Accessible Learning Services (ALS) team, providing full-cycle administrative facilitation, departmental support, and case management across the student accommodation lifecycle.

The ALC coordinates and facilitates service providers (e.g., interpreters, captioners, and educational assistants) for Deaf, deafened, hard of hearing, blind, and visually impaired learners, including assigning hours, maintaining schedules, and tracking service provider availability against learner need. The role processes accommodation renewals, facilitates assessment referrals to external psychologists, and reviews and pre-screens learners' funding applications (e.g., Bursary for Students with Disabilities, Canada Student Grant for Services and Equipment, Regional Assessment and Resource Centre, insurance providers, and out-of-province assistance programs) to determine eligibility and case manage them through to completion. The ALC liaises with psychologists and other specialized health care professionals, reviewing and interpreting psycho-educational assessments and medical documentation to determine appropriate accommodation supports, and acts as a subject matter expert on accessibility best practices for other departments. The role also coordinates with Innovative Learning, Information Technology Services, and academic areas to onboard service providers and provision access to learning platforms, and responds to phone and email inquiries from applicants, learners, parents, and service providers.

The ALC supports recruitment, orientation, and outreach activities (e.g., Open House, Ontario College Information Fair) as well as plans and facilitates departmental and transition programming (e.g., Transitions to Success, Transition to Work). The role communicates with faculty and staff to ensure learners receive accommodation supports, provides one-on-one recommendations to learners on accommodation and funding matters, delivers informational sessions across departments and external stakeholders, and leads recruitment campaigns for student workers and service providers.

In addition, the ALC contributes to quality assurance, program coordination, and systems support: researching and liaising with sector colleagues to align with leading practices, participating in a province-wide network of accessible learning practitioners, applying OHRC and AODA guidelines to determine reasonable accommodations, and compiling assessment metrics and data to support departmental and Ministry reporting (including AFSD and SAWD funding reports). The role maintains confidential learner records, including annual file purges, and communicates with law firms as needed to obtain consents for the disclosure of learner information. The ALC also supports the Manager and team operations with other duties as assigned.
