Vancouver Island University seeks an Access Resource Assistant to support students with disabilities. The role involves administrative tasks, direct student interaction, sourcing resources, and providing backup support. Applicants should have a degree and experience in a related field, aiming to create an inclusive and supportive learning environment.
Accessibility Services (AS) and Assessment and Examination Services (AES) provide critical supports for students who are registered with a disability. Once students are registered with AS they may be entitled to e-text and/or specialized equipment to support their learning while at VIU. The responsibility for providing these specific services falls within the purview of the Access Resource Assistant.
Duties:
Reporting to the Director of Student Services with in-scope supervision provided by AES Exam Specialists, VIU is in search of a candidate who possesses a combination of excellent organizational skills, technical acumen and a proven track for working with and serving students with a disability in a post-secondary environment. While much of the duties are administrative in nature, there are times when the Access Resource Assistant will have direct contact with AS students.
The Access Resource Assistant will also provide additional support to both AS and AES units when required, including back-up reception support during peak periods and absences and serving as an invigilator when necessary.

Equipment
- locate and request furniture moves for students in classrooms
- initiate annual stocktaking to locate missing chairs/stools
- maintain and track equipment loans
- report to facilities any access barriers on campus, including temporary parking passes
Other
- provide enhanced support for the AES Assistant
- provide back-up coverage for the AES Assistant and AS reception
- serve as an invigilator when required
Required Qualifications:
An undergraduate degree in any discipline from an appropriately accredited institution and a minimum of 3 years direct experience supporting vulnerable populations, particularly students with disabilities, preferably in a post-secondary environment or the equivalent lived experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
