Job summary

The University of Tennessee, Knoxville's Student Disability Services is accepting applications for part‑time Sign Language Interpreters. This hourly, as‑needed position supports students by providing interpreting services to ensure equal access to programs and activities.

Under supervision of the Coordinator for Interpreting, interpreters work with a second interpreter when needed, adhere to NAD‑RID ethics, and maintain compliance with applicable laws in an educational setting.

Qualifications

• Three years of professional interpreting experience.
• Knowledge of Deaf culture and the interpretation process.
• Ability to utilize a variety of sign language systems to interpret voice to sign and sign to voice in an academic setting.
• Demonstrated knowledge of NAD-RID’s Code of Professional Conduct.
• Excellent listening skills and ability to identify essential components of orally presented information.
• Knowledge of academic vocabulary.
• Ability to maintain professional boundaries with all SDS constituents.
• Ability to adapt to a flexible schedule based on student needs.
• Knowledge of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, ADA 1990, FERPA, and related higher education laws.

Responsibilities

• Provide interpreting/transliterating services for individuals with disabilities in courses and university activities.
• Work with a second interpreter when required to reduce fatigue and provide feedback.
• Troubleshoot classroom issues and notify the Coordinator promptly.
• Use independent judgment to ensure access and resolve problems in the moment.
• Adhere to NAD-RID Code of Professional Conduct.
• Maintain compliance with applicable disability laws.
