Job summary

Habitat Learn Inc. seeks ASL interpreters to support deaf and hard-of-hearing students in university and college settings, with in-person assignments in Mississauga and nearby regions.

Interpreters provide interpreting and transliteration in classrooms, meetings and events to ensure learning access. Applicants must be CASLI members, hold a minimum 2-year post-secondary diploma or degree from an accredited program, and have experience interpreting in academic environments.

Responsibilities

Job description

We are currently looking for ASL Interpreters for a variety of academic disciplines. Candidates will be expected to attend in person classes at university/colleges in Mississauga and surrounding regions. These service providers help students overcome barriers in class to succeed!

Responsibilities
  • Provide interpreting and transliteration services to deaf and hard-of-hearing students, faculty, and staff in academic and non-academic settings, including classrooms, meetings, events, and activities, as requested by the university or college.
  • Follow ethical standards of the profession, maintain confidentiality, and adhere to the university or college's policies and procedures.
  • Maintain accurate and timely records of interpreting services provided, including timesheets, invoices, and other necessary documentation.
  • Attend required meetings and trainings, as specified by the university or college.
  • Maintain professional development by staying current with new developments and advancements in the field of ASL interpretation.
Requirements

We are looking for individuals who have

  • An active member of the Canadian Association of Sign Language Interpreters (CASLI)
  • Minimum 2 year post-secondary diploma/degree from an accredited program.
  • Ability to match the diverse language use of consumers.
  • Experience with ASL Interpretation in an academic environment
  • Sensitivity to the needs of people with disabilities.
  • Ability to analyze and process information quickly
  • Able to work independently- being on time, dependable and able to meet deadlines

We require a minimum commitment of one academic semester.

Assignments vary depending on the student's schedules. Assignments typically take place between 8am - 9pm Monday to Saturday.
