Job summary

Lakeridge Health Oshawa is seeking a Registered Practical Nurse to join the Psychiatry General team in an interprofessional setting. The role covers inpatient psychiatric, addiction and general nursing care on the General unit and PICU, following the primary nursing model and contributing to individualized care plans.

The position requires an Ontario RPN license, current BCLS, and relevant mental health experience.

Qualifications

• Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario (in good standing)
• Current BCLS certificate required (per RN/ RPN standards)
• RPN Diploma from an accredited community college
• Minimum 1 year experience in Acute, Community Mental Health, or Addictions unit
• CNA certification in Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing is an asset
• Commitment to Reflective Practice Standards per CNO
• Knowledge of group theories and dynamics
• Knowledge of Community Mental Health Resources
• Completion of Non-Violent Crisis Prevention or equivalent within 1 month of hire
• Mental Health Certificate Program preferred with expected completion within 3 years
• Knowledge of Mental Health Act, Trauma-informed care, and psychotropic meds
• Ability to assess suicide risk and manage acute behaviors
• Strong interviewing and communication skills
• Ability to work with diverse cultural backgrounds
• Bilingualism is an asset

Wage Schedule: $36.950 - $39.020 per hour

Duties And Responsibilities

As a member of an interprofessional team, you will provide client-centred psychiatric, addiction and general nursing care, ensuring the security and safety of the patients while maintaining the CNO standards of nursing practice. You will be responsible for providing clinical care to patients on the inpatient mental health units, which includes the General unit and Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). Working within a primary nursing model, you will actively contribute to the treatment approach for the unit, perform assessments, develop, implement and evaluate the interprofessional plan of client care.

Qualifications

• Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario (in good standing);
• A current B.C.L.S. certificate is required
• Registered Practical Nurse Diploma from an accredited community college
• Minimum of current or 1 year experience in an Acute, Community Mental Health, or Addictions unit/program is required;
• CNA certification in Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing is considered an asset
• Demonstrated commitment to maintaining Reflective Practice Standards as outlined by the CNO;
• Demonstrated excellent knowledge of, and experience in group theories and dynamics;
• Demonstrated knowledge of Community Mental Health Resources;
• Completion of a Non-Violent Crisis Prevention or equivalent course, or within 1 month of hire.
• Completion of a Mental Health Certificate Program preferred with expected completion within 3 years of hire.
• Demonstrated knowledge of the Mental Health Act, Trauma-informed care and Psychotropic medication.
• Demonstrated understanding of approaches to assessing and management of suicide risk
• Demonstrated ability to intervene effectively in clinical situations requiring the management of disturbed behaviour
• Ability to conduct Mental Health Assessment with excellent interviewing and communication skills;
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to develop a therapeutic Nurse-Client relationship and work within a collaborative and diverse interprofessional team;
• Ability to work with clients of diverse cultural and social backgrounds is necessary
• Bilingualism or proficiency in a second language would be an asset;
• Must have satisfactory performance record;
