Job summary

Métis Nation British Columbia is seeking a Financial Accountant to contribute to budget development and financial management across MNBC ministries. You will prepare monthly, quarterly and annual statements, analyze variances, manage funding receivables, and support the year-end audit while ensuring policy compliance.

The role requires a degree in a relevant field, at least four years of auditing experience, and CPA PEP eligibility; strong communication and system skills are essential.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Financial Management, Accounting, Business Administration or Commerce.
  • Minimum four years of progressive related work experience leading and conducting audits.

  • Knowledge of MNBC policies and Métis contributions in BC is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the development of MNBC’s Ministry and Department budgets, operating, capital and special purpose funds, and perform functions related to funding, accounting, reporting, program costing and forecasting.
  • Prepares the Ministry and Department reporting including monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
  • Prepares ad hoc reports and reconciliations for various ministries and departments.
  • Monitors and analyzes operating and capital expenditures, reviews reports, budgetary variances and prepares regular capital progress reports.
  • Monitors funding agreements and receivables.
  • Assists in the compilation, coordination, and distribution of budget packages to stakeholders and partners.
  • Prepares and analyzes budget scenarios and variances.
  • Prepares allocation spreadsheets including inputting and analyzing data.
  • Performs reconciliations and analysis of various accounts.
  • Maintains the general ledger chart of accounts.
  • Maintains the integrity and maintenance of accounting records.
  • Prepares and processes journal entries.
  • Assists, trains, and supports users of MNBC’s reporting and accounting systems.
  • Interprets and provides advice on the application of financial policies and procedures.
  • Works with MNBC ministry and department staff to answer questions and problem-solve to rectify accounting and reporting issues.
  • Supports the year end annual audit process.
  • Participates in special projects within finance.
  • Ensures compliance with MNBC policies and procedures.
  • Assists with year-end audit preparations.
  • Participates in committees and project teams as required.
  • Undertakes related duties as assigned, consistent with the job grade of the position.
  • Other duties may be assigned as needed to ensure the efficient operation of MNBC.

Job description

The Financial Accountant assists in the development of budgets and perform functions related to funding, accounting, reporting, program costing and forecasting for the departments and ministries of MNBC. The Financial Accountant aids in the development of budgetary frameworks for MNBC’s Ministry and Department operations, encompassing budget creation, financial statement preparation, and program cost analysis. The position oversees financial reporting cycles, including monthly, quarterly, and annual statements, while also addressing ad hoc reporting needs and reconciliations for diverse ministries. Monitoring expenditure, budget deviations, and capital progress forms part of the responsibilities, along with managing funding agreements and receivables. The Financial Accountant compiles, coordinates, and disseminates budgetary materials, while also crafting budget scenarios and variance analyses. Maintenance of the chart of accounts, accounting records, and execution of journal entries are central to maintaining financial integrity. Additionally, the Financial Accountant supports users of reporting systems, interprets financial policies, troubleshoots accounting matters, and contributes to the year-end audit process and special financial projects. The incumbent ensures adherence to MNBC policies and aids in year-end audit preparations.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Degree in the field of Financial Management, Accounting, Business Administration, or Commerce from a recognized, post-secondary institution. Bachelor’s degree is preferred.
  • Minimum four (4) years of progressive related work experience leading and conducting audits related to the evaluation of financial, operational and information system internal controls.
  • Eligible for entry into the CPA Professional Education Program (PEP). Bachelor’s degree is preferred.
  • A combination of relevant experience, education and training will be considered.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, problem-solve and utilize team-building skills.
  • Proven ability to utilize strong interpersonal skills to deal with others effectively.
  • Proven ability to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and work with minimal supervision.
  • Proven ability to utilize, adapt and embrace new technologies, including Office 365 and other database/software required by the role.
  • Knowledge and/or awareness of the historical and contemporary contributions made by Métis people in BC.
  • Valid BC Class 5 Driver’s license and access to a reliable personal vehicle for work purposes.
  • Ability to provide a satisfactory Criminal Record Check.
