Job summary

The City of Selkirk is seeking a Civil Engineering Technician/Surveying professional to manage surveying activities and drafting for municipal infrastructure. You will maintain plans, provide data to consultants, and oversee capital projects in the Operations Department.

Requirements include a Diploma or Degree in Civil Engineering Technology, valid Manitoba driver’s license, and 1–2 years of municipal engineering experience. Proficiency in AutoCAD and surveying tools is essential.

Qualifications

  • Grade 12 education is required.
  • Diploma or degree in Civil Engineering Technology or equivalent.
  • Valid Class 5 Manitoba Driver’s License.
  • Ability to perform computer aided drafting (AutoCAD).
  • Ability to survey with Total Station, GPS, Transit & Level.
  • Good written and spoken communication.
  • 1–2 years of current municipal engineering experience.
  • Proficient in word processing and basic database management.
  • Physically able to perform labouring duties.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain, update and revise plans, drawings and records for the City.
  • Provide information to consultants, contractors, utilities, public and City Departments.
  • Conduct preliminary surveys, line surveys, cross sections, topographic surveys.
  • Prepare sketches and technical drawings from field notes and data.
  • Prepare design drawings for review; present to Council and public.
  • Oversee construction of capital projects for Operations.
  • Prepare charts, graphs and diagrams for publications and budgets.
  • Design roads, sidewalks, utilities and drainage features.
  • Set grade levels and elevations for buildings and lot drainage.
  • Prepare estimates for capital and maintenance projects.
  • Supervise surveying and drafting summer assistants.

The Opportunity

Under the general direction of the Director of Operations is responsible for all surveying activities and drafting duties regarding municipal infrastructure works for the Department of Operations and the Corporation.

Job Duties
Engineering Technology/Surveying
  • Maintain, update and revise existing plans, drawings and records for the City.
  • Provide relevant information regarding City Infrastructure to Engineering Consultants, contractors, utility companies, general public and other City Departments.
  • Conduct preliminary surveys, line surveys, cross sections, topographic surveys and all other surveys required by the Corporation.
  • Prepare sketch plans and technical drawings from field notes and existing data.
  • Prepare pre-design, design drawings and as built drawings for Director’s / Manager’s review; and Council and general public presentation.
  • Oversee the construction of capital projects relevant to the Operations Department or as directed.
  • Prepare charts, graphs and diagrams for publications, reports, and budgets.
  • Design roads, streets, sidewalks, curbing, underground utilities, surface drainage systems and other associated land features.
  • Set all grade levels and elevations pertaining to building construction and lot drainage.
  • Prepare estimates for the purposes of capital projects and maintenance projects.
  • Supervise surveying and drafting summer season assistant.
Asset Management
  • Ensure the City’s Asset Registry and other asset data is kept current by performing data collection and maintenance functions as required.
  • Understand and comply with the City’s Capital Asset Management policies.
  • Support the development and delivery of the City’s Capital Asset Management Program by providing professional advice, conducting research, and undertaking related tasks as needed.
  • Maintain a superior understanding of asset management practices and stay current with trends and developments in that field.
Emergency Plan Support
  • Provide support services within the City of Selkirk Emergency Plan in the event of an emergency as required.
Training and Other Duties
  • Provide support and training to other employees as required.
  • Perform other related duties as may be assigned.
Qualifications and Minimum Requirements
  • Grade 12 Education
  • Diploma or Degree in Civil Engineering Technology or equivalent related education and experience
  • Possession of a valid Class 5 Manitoba Driver’s License
  • Ability to perform computer assisted drafting (AUTOCad)
  • Ability to perform surveying with the following: Total Station, GPS, Transit & Level
  • Ability to express ideas effectively, both orally and in writing
  • 1 – 2 years current experience in Municipal Engineering
  • Demonstrated competence in computer word processing and basic data base management.
  • Must be physically able to perform all the labouring aspects or other duties associated with the position.
