Job summary

Niagara Health is seeking a Lab Assistant for the Core Laboratory at the Niagara Falls site. The role involves performing phlebotomy, technical and non-technical procedures, and using HIS/LIS systems including Cerner Millennium under supervision.

Qualifications

• Completion of an accredited Laboratory Technician or Laboratory Assistant program.
• Completion of Micro-Credential for MLA program.
• Minimum 3 years of practical experience in a hospital Core Laboratory.
• Certification from CSMLS/MLPAO/CMLTO/CAMLPR or equivalent.
• Advanced phlebotomy skills for patients of all ages.
• Commitment to 30 hours of continuing education per year.
• Knowledge of laboratory equipment maintenance and operation.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.

POSITION OBJECTIVE

Functioning as a team player, the Laboratory Assistant - Core Laboratory will support all staff in the provision of quality Laboratory services within the scope of the role. This includes performing phlebotomy, technical and non-technical procedures, as well as using HIS and LIS systems, including Cerner Millenium as required, while working under the direct supervision of a Registered Technologist, Laboratory. The Laboratory Assistant - Core Laboratory may perform cross-functional duties as required.

The Laboratory Assistant - Core Laboratory will focus on exceeding our patient/client needs and will support the mission, vision and values as determined by Niagara Health.

Candidates may include:

• Unregistered Medical Laboratory Technologists;
• Registered Medical Laboratory Technologists who are not currently practising;
• Laboratory Assistants registered on the CMLTO voluntary roster including completion of 30 hours of professional continuing education per year

QUALIFICATIONS

• Completion of a Laboratory Technician or Laboratory Assistant program from an accredited institution or completion of the discipline specific degree required
• Completion of Micro-Credential for MLA program required; offered by Michener Institute of Education or similar post secondary colleges
• Minimum 3 years of practical, related experience in a hospital setting Core Laboratory required
• Minimum 1 certification from CSMLS, MLPAO, CMLTO, CAMLPR or agency recognized by the Laboratory Licensing Branch of the Ministry of Health of the Province of Ontario required
• Demonstrated advanced skills in phlebotomy techniques for patients/clients of all ages
• Commitment to continuing education. i.e. completion of 30 hours of professional continuing education per year
• Knowledge of laboratory equipment maintenance and operation required
• High proficiency with computer software/application (i.e.: Microsoft Office Suite)
• Ability to troubleshoot operational and workflow issues
• Knowledge of medical terminology
• Ability to identify and report workplace hazards and comply with required personal Protective equipment practices
• Knowledge of lab policy and procedures and accreditation (AcDx) requirements
• Excellent organizational, time management and prioritization skills
• Excellent verbal and written communication and customer service skills
• Good problem-solving skills with critical thinking
• Ability to work effectively and efficiently in a fast-paced environment and under stressful situations
• Proven ability to function effectively as a member of multidisciplinary team and to work independently and collaboratively
• Excellent work performance and attendance required
