We are hiring a Software Support Engineer to work in a dynamic role involving Linux-based infrastructure and applications, covering layers from bare metal to open source applications like OpenStack, Kubernetes, Ceph, and more. This role offers an opportunity for a Linux and open source enthusiast to build a career at Canonical, addressing critical issues that often require upstream bug fixes, and working across the entire tech stack.

The role includes troubleshooting, collaboration with upstream communities, developing bug fixes, reviewing code, and maintaining clear communication. It is a remote position with potential international travel up to 10% for meetings and conferences.

Responsibilities include:

1. Resolving complex customer problems related to Ubuntu, Kernel, Ceph, OpenStack, Kubernetes, and other open source software.
2. Collaborating with support and engineering teams.
3. Participating in upstream communities.
4. Developing and backporting patches, working with upstream projects.
5. Reviewing code and demonstrating good technical judgment.
6. Managing priorities and participating in process improvements.
7. Communicating clearly and concisely.
8. Working remotely with occasional international travel.

Ideal candidates will have:

1. An excellent academic record.
2. A background in Computer Science, STEM, or similar.
3. Experience with Linux and open source software.
4. Proficiency in Python, Go, C, or C++ on Linux.
5. A passion for learning new technologies and solving difficult issues.
6. Willingness to travel up to 4 times a year for internal events.

Nice-to-have skills include a love for technology, curiosity, flexibility, strong soft skills, and interest or willingness to learn about Ubuntu Linux, Kubernetes, OpenStack, Ceph, QEMU/KVM, LXC/LXD, databases, Debian packaging, and distributed systems.
