About the role

The Senior Project Engineer will oversee capital projects (CapEx) within a multinational food industry environment, supporting Barry Callebaut’s Cocoa Business sites in Brazil. Responsibilities span concept/feasibility, engineering design, procurement, and implementation. The role translates business needs into actionable project plans and ensures delivery while adhering to standards and policies. This position fosters excellence and innovation and leads teams toward strategic objectives. Based in Itabuna, Bahia, Brazil, with eventual support for a second factory in Ilhéus, Bahia; travel between plants as required.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and oversee outsourced engineers/engineering companies and staff; perform the full range of professional engineering work assignments.
• Develop and validate frameworks, standards and internal work instructions for the department.
• Serve as project manager on construction projects; manage budgets and schedules; direct staff, consultants, and contractors; administer contracts and approve payments.
• Create an equitable, multicultural workplace.
• Prepare and process project documentation; maintain records; prepare drawings, specifications, reports, and communications.
• Establish and revise technical, QA, and QC standards; perform design reviews and obtain stakeholder approvals.
• Obtain stakeholder input and participate in steering groups; represent Project Engineering in operational decisions.
• Collaborate with management to plan, organize, and direct resources to meet budget and schedule; assist in competitive bidding documents and contract awards.
• Ensure project completion per work plans and compliance with laws and internal policies.
• With Procurement, manage procurement strategies, select and manage contractors, vendors and suppliers; negotiate contracts.
• Risk management, identify risks, develop mitigation, create contingency plans.
• Lead budget estimation for CapEx 2-year Mid Term Plan; obtain validation from Engineering Manager.
• Perform other related work as required.

About you

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or related field; Master’s degree (MS or MBA) is an asset.
• Master’s Degree and/or PMP certification is a plus.
• Progressive engineering experience in manufacturing/corporate environments with leadership of teams and impactful projects.
• Full proficiency in business and technical English.
• High-level knowledge of Microsoft Project; proficient in project management tools (e.g., MS Project, Primavera) and engineering software (AutoCAD, SolidWorks); familiarity with ERP systems is an advantage.
• Proven technical experience in multifunctional projects and leadership with references.
• Exceptional communication and negotiation skills; ability to present technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
• Exposure to international manufacturing environments is a plus.
