Job Title: Data Scientist - Carbon Products
Location: Remote (with occasional travel to remote field locations in the Amazon)
About Mombak:
Mombak is a startup on a mission to enable humanity to build a sustainable climate future. Founded in mid 2021 and seed-funded by tier-1 investors including USV and Kaszek, we are dedicated to restoring native biodiverse forests on degraded parts of the Brazilian Amazon. Our goal is to become the world's largest carbon removal company, financing our projects solely through the sale of carbon removal credits. With a team of internationally-recognized scientists, experts in restoration ecology, and seasoned entrepreneurs, we aim to prove that restoration of native biodiverse ecosystems can be profitable while benefiting local communities and the planet. Over the past 4 years, we've raised over $200M, managed more than 20,000 hectares of land, and planted more than 7.5M seedlings of native biodiverse species, with tens of millions more to come soon.
Role Overview:
We are looking for a senior data scientist to design, build, and own Mombak’s carbon‑estimation models and analytics pipeline. You will combine field measurements with drone, LiDAR, and satellite data to produce transparent, audit‑ready carbon‑stock estimates that underpin credit issuance and certification. Working cross‑functionally, you will embed rigorous yet pragmatic analytics into every stage of our product and help shape the data‑driven culture of a fast‑growing climate‑tech company.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and maintain statistical and machine‑learning models that convert multimodal data (plots, drone imagery, LiDAR, satellite) into reliable biomass and carbon estimates aligned with leading voluntary‑market standards.
- Quantify and communicate uncertainty using robust statistical techniques to ensure estimates withstand independent audit.
- Architect cloud‑native data pipelines (Python/R, SQL, Airflow) that automate the workflow from data ingestion to reporting, with an emphasis on reproducibility, scalability, and traceability.
- Build modular geospatial tools for raster/vector processing and integrate remote‑sensing products into the modelling stack.
- Produce clear documentation, visualizations, and narratives that translate complex modelling decisions for auditors, executives, and non‑technical stakeholders.
- Act as the primary technical contact during verification cycles, defending methodological choices and facilitating data exchange with external partners.
- Track and adopt emerging scientific tools and best practices in Measurement, Reporting, and Verification (MRV), shortening processing time while maintaining rigour.
- Mentor teammates through code reviews and knowledge‑sharing, fostering a culture of excellence in data and statistical thinking.
Requirements:
- Knowledge of statistics and machine learning that it is both broad and deep (can both derive and implement)
- 4+ years of professional experience as a data scientist or ML engineer tackling complex problems end-to-end
- Production experience with cloud-native data pipelines (Python and/or R, SQL, version control, Airflow, BI Tools)
- Hands-on GIS skills: raster algebra, shapefile manipulation, coordinate reference systems tricks and traps
- Proven ability to frame ambiguous business problems and deliver measurable impact. Has to be able to deliver for scalable data processing and model deployment
- Experience with uncertainty quantification, sensitivity analysis, and model validation techniques
- Keen eye for detail and a commitment to data integrity
- Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and drive projects to completion in a fast-paced environment
- Excellent written and spoken English – audit memos are non-negotiable
Nice to have:
- Experience in forestry, carbon markets, or ecological modelling
- Familiarity with concepts like carbon credits, offsets, and MRV (Measurement, Reporting, and Verification)
- Experience in a startup or high-growth environment
- Excellent written and spoken Portuguese – most of our team are Portuguese speakers and all of our operation is in Brazil
What do we offer?
- Remote-first work model, with flexibility to work from anywhere in Brazil or internationally
- Competitive salary + stock options in a high growth startup
- Regular offsites and field immersions with the Mombak team across Brazil.
- Comprehensive health insurance for you and your dependents
- Paid parental leave, aligned with progressive global standards
- Annual professional development stipend to support continuous learning
