Operations & Technical Adviser – Joint-Ventures

• Key strategic and leadership role where you will participate in the long-term strategic development of the assets and the JV.
• Permanent role based in São Luís, Brazil with hybrid work environment: three days on site as a minimum and the other days possible home office.

About the role

The primary purpose of theOperations & Technical Advisor - Joint Ventureswill be to provide and coordinate technical support to the Brazilian Joint Ventures – Alumar (alumina refinery) and Mineração Rio do Norte (MRN – bauxite mine).

As a key role reporting to the Principal Advisor Bauxite & Alumina Joint Venture, the following are the key activities and responsibilities of the role:

• Contribute to the success of our organization through the development of long-term relationships with JV team and operational partners.
• Represent Rio Tinto in the Technical Committee and the Projects Committee at the Rio Tinto JVs in Brazil. Review data and provide technical advice aligned with the strategic objectives of the asset.
• Pursue technical development participating in Rio Tinto Aluminium technical teams, supporting global projects, business development and assignments, as necessary.
• Monitor MRN bauxite quality delivered to Alumar and manage technical issues as required.
• Technical interface with Rio Tinto refinery and mine technical specialists to analyze and support the asset’s performance.
• Contribute and monitor Asset Integrity assessments and actions at the refinery.
• Production and Operational performance reporting (weekly and monthly).
• Development of request for approval documentation for CAPEX projects according to industry best practices and requirements defined at Rio Tinto Aluminum.
• Monitor, analyze and report firsthand CAPEX projects implementation performance.
• Represent Rio Tinto at technical forums with external associated entities including ABAL (Brazilian Association of Aluminium) and IBRAM (Brazilian Institute of Mining).
• Management of the Rio Tinto office in Sao Luis (currently located within the industrial unit of Alumar).
• Active supporting role (back up person) for the Rio Tinto Logistic and Supply Chain processes at Alumar.

What you’ll bring

To be successful in this role you will bring:

• Engineering’s degree (preferable chemical, metallurgist, or mining) and 15+ years’ relevant work experience.
• Experience in Heavy Industries, Joint Ventures, Ports or Power Industry.
• Strong understanding and commitment to Health & Safety and ESG principles.
• Knowledge of the Aluminium Industry and its supply chain.

• Significant alumina refinery Bayer process and mining experience.
• Effective interpersonal, communication, negotiation & relationship skills.
• Fluency in the English language (written and or spoken) is essential.
  • Capability in the French language (written and or spoken) is considered advantageous.
