YOUR TASKS
The Biostatistics Unit of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences supports researchers of the faculty and Ghent University Hospital with the statistical aspects of their research, from study design to publication. To strengthen our team, we are looking for a statistician (m/f/x) for a position within the unit’s support service. The focus of this position is on statistical advice, data analysis and guidance.
- You conduct intake and advisory meetings with researchers and translate their research question into an appropriate study design and analysis approach.
- You support researchers with grant applications and study protocols: sample size calculations, randomisation, developing the statistical parts of the protocol and drafting statistical analysis plans (SAPs).
- You perform statistical analyses for clinical and epidemiological studies (e.g., regression models, models for repeated measures and survival analysis) and report the results clearly for non-statisticians.
- You guide master’s students of the faculty with the statistical aspects of their master’s dissertation.
- You work reproducibly (R, Quarto/R Markdown, version control with Git) and document your analysis code so that colleagues can pick up your work.
- You contribute to scientific publications arising from your collaborations, in particular to the methods and results sections.
- You help with the unit’s training initiatives, such as statistics workshops for researchers.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
- You hold a Master’s degree in Statistical Data Analysis, (Bio)statistics or equivalent. Candidates with a different Master’s degree (e.g., mathematics, bioscience engineering, biomedical sciences, epidemiology, computer science) who can demonstrate equivalent experience in statistical data analysis are also eligible.
- You have a thorough knowledge of statistical methods commonly used in medical and health research, such as linear and logistic regression, analysis of clustered data, survival analysis, sample size calculation and handling missing data.
- You are proficient in R. Experience with SPSS or SAS is an asset.
- You can explain statistical concepts clearly to researchers and students without a statistical background, both orally and in writing.
- You communicate fluently in English. Proficiency in Dutch is an asset.
- You work accurately and independently, can follow up several projects at once and set priorities, and enjoy working in a team.
- Experience with clinical or epidemiological data, or with statistical consultancy, is an asset.
WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU
- We offer you a contract of definite duration for a period of 1 year.
- All Ghent University staff members enjoy a number of benefits, such as a wide range of training and education opportunities, 36 days of holiday leave (on an annual basis for a full‑time job) supplemented by annual fixed bridge days, bicycle allowance and eco vouchers.
