Job summary

Aerospacelab is seeking a motivated Materials Engineer to join the Solar Array Assembly team in Belgium. You will work on materials and processes for SAA, conduct tests, and build a robust technical case for customer design reviews.

Join a fast-paced, hands-on environment with close collaboration between lab, shop floor, and AIT teams. The role emphasizes materials QA, RCA, and shaping the product for space use.

Qualifications

  • Must have a Master’s degree, PhD, or equivalent in Materials Science, Chemistry, Mechanical Engineering, or Aerospace Engineering.
  • 5+ years of experience in a materials engineering role, preferably in space/aerospace.
  • Experience with polymer materials (adhesives, encapsulants, composites, coatings) and their testing.
  • Knowledge of space solar array technology: multijunction cells, coverglass, interconnect welding, substrates.
  • Hands-on attitude: lab and shop floor experience, capable of running tests.

Responsibilities

  • Select and qualify SAA materials and processes (adhesives, encapsulants, substrates, coverglass bonding, interconnect welding).
  • Write test plans and follow samples through manufacturing and testing; analyze results and write reports.
  • Maintain DML/DPL materials lists and justify choices.
  • Present results in design reviews (PDR, CDR, QR) and respond to customer questions/RIDs.
  • Follow up suppliers and test laboratories: specs, test campaigns, inspections, non-conformances.
  • Support SAA mechanical, electrical and AIT teams on materials issues and root-cause analysis.
