Background

E3G is a world leading strategy think tank on the political economy of climate change with a global outlook. We work on the frontier of the climate landscape tackling the barriers and advancing the solutions to a safe climate for all. Our goal is to translate climate politics, economics and policies into action. We pride ourselves on bringing independence to an extremely polarised discussion and holding policy makers to account on their promises. E3G's diplomatic work extends across the whole climate regime, including the UN negotiations and cooperation on the energy transition, financial reform, green industry, trade and increasing resilience. E3G particularly focuses on understanding and influencing the connections between climate politics and global agendas in foreign, security and economic policy. E3G is consistently ranked as one of the top-ten most influential environmental think tanks in the world by the University of Pennsylvania's Global Go To Think Tank Index. E3G offers a dynamic and fast paced working environment that will value your insight, initiative and collaboration wherever you are in the organisation.

Role Overview

The Senior Researcher will contribute to the EU Industry team's work to accelerate the decarbonisation and transformation of European industry in line with climate neutrality, competitiveness and resilience. The role will combine policy research and analysis, political strategy, stakeholder engagement and written communications across three initial areas: reform of the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS), industrial electrification, and EU funding and support instruments.

Working with colleagues across E3G, the Senior Researcher will help develop practical policy propositions, produce high-quality briefings and reports, monitor political and policy developments, and engage policymakers, civil society, business, industry, finance and other expert stakeholders. The role is suited to someone who already brings expertise in one or more relevant areas and is motivated to deepen and broaden their knowledge across the portfolio.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct research and analysis on EU industrial decarbonisation and industrial policy, initially focusing on the EU ETS, industrial electrification, and funding and investment.
  • Develop practical policy recommendations and contribute to political strategies that support the transition of European industry.
  • Monitor relevant EU policy and political developments, stakeholder positions and emerging debates, and translate these into timely analysis and recommendations.
  • Produce clear, accessible briefings, reports, presentations and other materials for internal and external audiences.
  • Engage policymakers, industry, civil society and other stakeholders, and contribute to the delivery of projects, partnerships and coalitions across E3G's industry portfolio.
Experience and Skills
  • Three to five years of relevant professional experience, with progressively greater responsibility and a track record of delivering high-quality work.
  • A degree, professional qualification or equivalent experience in a relevant area.
  • Knowledge and practical experience in at least one relevant area, such as industrial decarbonisation or industrial policy; the EU ETS or carbon pricing; industrial electrification or energy policy; or EU funding, investment and support instruments.
  • A good understanding of EU politics, institutions and policy processes.
  • Strong research and analytical skills, including the ability to learn quickly, assess evidence and reach well-founded judgements.
  • The ability to produce clear, accessible briefings, reports, presentations and other written materials, and to communicate ideas credibly in spoken English.
  • Experience engaging external stakeholders and confidence working with policymakers and experts from government, civil society, business, industry and finance.
  • Strong organisational skills, attention to detail and a focus on delivering agreed outputs, results and outcomes.
  • Experience working in or with EU institutions, or within the Brussels policy community, and relevant stakeholder networks.
  • Knowledge across more than one of the role’s core policy areas or of industrial sectors such as steel, cement or chemicals.
  • Experience supporting partnerships, coalitions, consortia or multi-organisation projects.
  • A good working knowledge of another European language.
