Description du poste

E3G is recruiting a Senior Policy Advisor to advance our work around UNFCCC and climate diplomacy. This is an exciting time to join E3G and build the next generation of climate diplomacy and engagement for the organisation that will be critical in spurring action and impact. The Senior Policy Advisor role will be based from either our London, Brussels or Berlin office, with a preference for London.

Context

The global climate regime is entering a new phase. With the core framework for implementing the Paris Agreement now largely in place, the priority must be to accelerate implementation and ensure that international cooperation delivers real-world progress on mitigation, adaptation, resilience and finance. At the same time, geopolitical turbulence, economic uncertainty, energy security concerns and growing pressure on public finances are reshaping the conditions for international cooperation.

The UNFCCC remains central to global climate action, but needs to evolve to support delivery in this new context. This means strengthening the links between negotiations and real-economy action, making greater use of coalitions and partnerships where they can deliver progress, and connecting climate diplomacy with wider economic, energy, trade, finance and development agendas. The period to the second Global Stocktake (GST2) in 2028 will be critical to demonstrating progress, building confidence in international cooperation and creating the conditions for stronger action through the next NDC cycle.

Background

E3G is a world leading strategy think tank on the political economy of climate change with a global outlook. We work on the frontier of the climate landscape tackling the barriers and advancing the solutions to a safe climate for all. Our goal is to translate climate politics, economics and policies into action. We pride ourselves on bringing independence to an extremely polarised discussion and holding policy makers to account on their promises. E3G’s diplomatic work extends across the whole climate regime, including the UN negotiations and cooperation on the energy transition, financial reform, green industry, trade and increasing resilience. E3G particularly focuses on understanding and influencing the connections between climate politics and global agendas in foreign, security and economic policy. E3G is consistently ranked as one of the top-ten most influential environmental think tanks in the world by the University of Pennsylvania’s Global Go To Think Tank Index. E3G offers a dynamic and fast paced working environment that will value your insight, initiative and collaboration wherever you are in the organisation.

Role Overview

It is against this backdrop that E3G is recruiting a highly versatile and experienced practitioner to serve as Senior Policy Advisor for UNFCCC. This position will lead the UNFCCC engagement work within a dynamic, high-powered, and highly visible multi-location team within the Climate Diplomacy & Geopolitics (CDG) division of E3G and will have a particular goal of advancing E3G climate diplomacy goals and objectives in international fora including the UNFCCC process, COP, at the UN and beyond.

This position requires deep experience working within the UNFCCC framework, ideally with a track record for influencing and solid personal network in this space. It will be responsible for building and cultivating critical relationships within governments, across international negotiations and relevant fora, and across the broader stakeholder community, as well as driving relevant political analysis, research, advocacy, and communications initiatives with key foreign policy actors and institutions to drive ambitious effective climate cooperation in multilateral venues.

The role will also work closely with relevant E3G teams around thematic issues such as finance, trade, industry, energy transition, adaptation and resilience which are critical areas to shape international climate cooperation. It will report to Programme Lead, Climate Diplomacy & Geopolitics, and work closely across CDG and the organisation. You would be responsible for line management of a small team, including at least one Policy Advisor and/or researcher.

Person Description

You are a highly motivated and intellectually curious international climate policy professional with the ability to work quickly and creatively across complex issue sets, disparate actors and policy agendas, and different coalitions to identify and develop solutions and diplomacy pathways toward climate cooperation and impact. You pride yourself in building and maintaining trusted relationships across the foreign policy community and are committed to high quality outputs even when under pressure. You excel at fostering and nurturing a team and working across teams and issue areas to yield the greatest impact.

Experience and Skills

The successful candidate will also be able to demonstrate:

  • At least seven years of experience working in the fields of one or more of: foreign policy, climate change policy, international relations, negotiations.
  • Experiences of building consensus across countries and stakeholder groups around sensitive issues; creating and facilitating dialogue and agreement.
  • Demonstrable experience working on international climate policy and international issues in both analytical and influencing roles, including ideally in multilateral contexts and venues related to climate. Experiencing working with and on the UNFCCC process is highly desirable.
  • Ability to operate confidently at high and “expert” level, in the worlds of government, business, the media and civil society. Used to operating internationally, with a high degree of cultural sensitivity. Strong personal networks at international level would be an advantage.
  • Track record of thought leadership and problem solving, including authorship of significant reports and comment pieces.
  • Experience managing complex projects, line management, and donor relationships.
  • Commitment to achieving E3G’s objectives, and to working in an innovative and entrepreneurial manner. You will have strong strategic and political understanding, will prioritise achieving outcomes over running activities, and be capable of inspiring and facilitating action by others;
  • Strong written and spoken English a must. Good knowledge of at least one other language would be an advantage.
