Ghent University is looking for a Professor in Comparative Oncology. The successful candidate will lead research in veterinary medicine, conducting internationally recognised studies while supervising PhD candidates and teaching Bachelor courses in Biochemistry.

This position offers a temporary tenure-track appointment and provides a generous starting grant of €240,000 for operational costs. Candidates should possess a Doctorate and have relevant post-doctoral experience.

ASSIGNMENT

You will be part of the Department of Veterinary and Biosciences, specifically the Biochemistry research group. The position, funded by the Special Research Fund, is granted the privilege of focusing primarily on research for a 5‑year period. During that period the teaching load will be limited to no more than 8 ECTS credits per semester on average over a period of 3 years.

ACADEMIC RESEARCH

You will conduct innovative and internationally recognised research in comparative oncology and supervise PhD candidates and master’s thesis students.

ACADEMIC EDUCATION

You will teach several courses in the first and second years of the Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine (e.g., Bio‑organic Chemistry, Biochemistry I, Biochemistry II) and will later take on full responsibility for these courses.

INSTITUTIONAL AND SOCIETAL ENGAGEMENT

Based on your expertise you will contribute to university operations and undertake external assignments, including internal and external services of the Biochemistry research group.

PROFILE

• You have a strong academic CV with international visibility in oncological research within veterinary medicine:
  • Knowledge of innovations in contemporary cancer research.
  • Achievements in research and education (publications, presentations, etc.).
  • Ability to initiate and supervise projects and secure funding.
  • Strong didactic and communication skills.
  • Experience supervising PhD and master’s students and commitment to a supportive work environment.
  • Mobility and participation in internationalisation activities are recommended.
  • Experience with valorisation of research findings is considered an asset.
• You work collaboratively and integrate smoothly into the department/faculty, seeking opportunities both inside and outside the university and actively use your network.
• You show leadership potential or have leadership experience.
• If you do not know Dutch, you are willing to learn it; Dutch or English will be required for teaching.

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

You will receive a temporary appointment in a tenure‑track system for 5 years, with the possibility of transition to a permanent associate professor after a positive evaluation. The term of office may be altered upon transition.
