Joint Research Centre (JRC) in Brussels is seeking a proactive Graphic Designer to join the Visual Communication team. The role involves producing visuals for online and offline use, from concept to final assets, and handling infographics, posters, and publications layouts.

You will conceptualise graphics, support the JRC brand system, and develop templates for scientific units. Collaboration across units and with senior managers is essential, with travel as needed.

Qualifications

  • A degree in graphic design or similar discipline.
  • At least 1 year of graphic design experience.
  • Excellent command of English (C1).
  • Comfortable with Microsoft Office software like Word, Power Point, Excel, Teams and Sharepoint Online.

Responsabilités

  • Create visuals, from initial concept to final assets, both for online and offline use (visual identities, visuals for social media and websites, infographics, posters, leaflets, publications layout, exhibitions etc.).
  • Conceptualise and design graphics, presentations, infographics, report layout and data visualisations from complex documents or scientific reports.
  • Contribute to the development of the JRC brand system and visual identity, in collaboration with the team.
  • Develop guidelines and templates for visual productions by scientific units.
  • Assist scientific units in their visual productions.
  • Participate and contribute to animate visual communication networks both within the JRC and the European Commission.
  • Work collaboratively with the visual communication team and other members of the Communication Unit to accomplish goals and objectives.

WE ARE

The Joint Research Centre (JRC) provides independent, evidence-based knowledge and science, supporting EU policies to positively impact society.

The current vacancy is with Unit Communication that reports directly to the JRC DirectorGeneral, and its mission is to:

  • centrally coordinate and perform communication actions for different target groups, i.e. related to press material, web content, social media, Commission and JRC internal communication, events, incl. their editorial control;
  • set up a framework for disseminating JRC deliverables and for strategic communication;
  • manage relationships with journalists and spokespersons; assist Cabinets, JRC (senior) managers and other JRC entities on Communication.

The Unit is looking for a Graphic Designer to join the Visual Communication team.

We offer a position in a dynamic unit of 42 people organised in different teams, based mainly in Ispra (IT) and in Brussels (BE). We work cross-unit and cross-organisation and look for a colleague who embraces this collaborative and proactive approach. We propose a familyfriendly working environment, with online collaboration and occasional travel.

The position is located in Brussels and the candidate will be part of a dynamic and motivated team and working very closely with other teams, especially the external communication team, the internal communication team and the events team.

WE PROPOSE

The jobholder will mainly have the following tasks:

  • Create visuals, from initial concept to final assets, both for online and offline use (visual identities, visuals for social media and websites, infographics, posters, leaflets, publications layout, exhibitions etc.),
  • Conceptualise and design graphics, presentations, infographics, report layout and data visualisations from complex documents or scientific reports,
  • Contribute to the development of the JRC brand system and visual identity, in collaboration with the team.
  • Develop guidelines and templates for visual productions by scientific units,
  • Assist scientific units in their visual productions,
  • Participate and contribute to animate visual communication networks both within the JRC and the European Commission,
  • Work collaboratively with the visual communication team and other members of the Communication Unit to accomplish goals and objectives,
  • Respond quickly to changing priorities and adjust work accordingly,
  • Deliver results in a timely and efficient manner,
  • Demonstrate flexibility in adapting to new challenges and situations, as well as working cross-teams,
WE LOOK FOR

We are looking for an enthusiastic, motivated, well-organised and proactive Graphic Designer with a strong portfolio of graphic work that demonstrates the skills and experience outlined below.

The ideal candidate has the following experience and competences:

Experience
  • A degree in graphic design or similar disciplines,
  • Proven experience as graphic designer of at least 1 year,
  • Excellent speaking and drafting skills and excellent command in English (C1),
  • Comfortable with Microsoft Office software like Word, Power Point, Excel, Teams and Sharepoint Online.
Design skills
  • Capacity to interpret and apply branding guidelines to different use cases,
  • Ability to coherently follow an institutional communication style, representing the European values in a suitable way,
  • Sound knowledge of the design process, including briefing analysis, guiding discussions with clients to receive satisfying information and present coherent design solutions,
  • Proven experience in presenting and explaining design concepts effectively to clients and team members,
  • Demonstrated ability to create compelling visual identities for events, communication campaigns and projects,
  • Skilled at analysing complex topics, asking the right questions and providing guidance on how to translate these topics into accessible visual formats for non-expert audiences (e.g. report infographics, simple data visualisations, web articles, social media visuals, presentations etc.),
  • Sound knowledge of graphic layout and final-art preparation for both print and digital media, including accessibility requirements for PDF, Word and InDesign
  • A sharp eye for detail and commitment to precision in every deliverable,
  • Active interest in keeping up-to-date with design trends and tools and applying them meaningfully to ongoing work,
  • A systems-thinking approach to visual design,
  • Interest in photography and audio-visual production would be considered an advantage,
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud, especially Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, Acrobat (Animation and video editing software is a plus),
  • Knowledge of Canva (to support the Social Media Team occasionally) and data visualisation tools are a plus.

  • Proven ability to adapt to changing priorities and working modalities,
  • Track record of delivering high-quality work in a structured and timely manner, including under tight deadlines,
  • Skilled at communication and presenting design concepts clearly and effectively to different audiences,
  • Genuine commitment to collaboration, team dynamics and knowledge sharing,
  • Capacity to work autonomously with self-motivation and a clear focus on project goals.
