Description du poste

Data Analyst
Service description:

The transmission network is a key link between France, Europe's largest electricity exporter, and markets in Northern Europe. The main activities are as follows:

  • Asset management: maintaining and developing the network, as well as connecting electrical installations to the network;
  • System management: granting access to the network in a straightforward, objective and transparent way, providing full services for transporting electricity, monitoring flows on the network to ensure that it runs smoothly and managing the balance between electricity consumption and production 24 hours a day;
  • Market facilitation: developing initiatives to improve how the electricity market operates.
Context

On top of the development of the grid, asset and system management and market facilitation mentioned above, the Belgian TSO is also responsible for conducting several security of supply studies (short, medium and long term), vision studies, cost-benefit analyses of future grid projects, and more. These studies are based on economic dispatch tools, which evaluate the need for additional capacity, the economic outputs or the margin available in the system for every hour of the year.

Performing these studies is among the main responsibilities of the Scenarios, Market & Adequacy Analysis (SMA) team.

This assignment aims to contract one on-site consultant to support the team in carrying out several tasks focused on enhancing the transparency of the data published by SMA and developing clear, insightful, and impactful visualisations from it.

The ideal candidate is a proactive "data geek" and "energy geek" with knowledge of data mining, data gathering and processing (mainly in Python), data visualisation (Power BI, React.js, etc.) and, ideally, experience with an economic dispatch tool such as ANTARES. This assignment also requires a basic understanding of energy systems.

Requirements

The consultant will help perform different tasks within the SMA team:

  • Improve data management processes within SMA (set up data warehouse, data pipelines, etc.);
  • Explore large amounts of data generated by simulations;
  • Benchmark visualisations from equivalent studies, such as ERAA, TYNDP, MLZ, NESO FES and RTE;
  • Benchmark visualisations already available within SMA;
  • Create visualisations from simulation outputs, including writing and updating appropriate scripts;
  • Present and iterate on the created visualisations with key stakeholders and management to ensure they meet their intended purpose;
  • Create visualisations to compare different studies or historical data;
  • Create and update scripts to identify inconsistencies in simulation input and output data;
  • Propose user-friendly interfaces to dynamically explore data that could be publicly shared.
Example tasks

A non-exhaustive list of tasks is provided below:

  • Consolidate historical data into a data warehouse;
  • Create or update Python tools to analyse outputs from the ANTARES simulation tool or other solvers;
  • Create visualisations of simulation outputs;
  • Critically analyse algorithm results and assist in identifying key trends;
  • Develop data engineering solutions and interfaces between tools.

Service requirements
Hard skills
  • Python (must have): Python is extensively used in the existing toolset. The outcome of the project must be compatible with the current toolchain.
  • Power BI (must have): Power BI is the primary visualisation tool used by the team. The project should build upon existing dashboards and visualisations.
  • React.js (nice to have): React.js is used for specific types of visualisations. Knowledge of React is an advantage.
  • ANTARES (nice to have): Mainly knowledge of the input/output interface and a general understanding of economic dispatch tools. ANTARES is an economic dispatch tool developed by RTE that simulates the electricity market on an hourly basis. Experience with market simulations or similar solvers is valuable. A basic understanding of energy systems is also required.
Soft skills
  • Medior profile with a minimum of 3 years of experience;
  • Knowledge of and interest in the energy market;
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively;
  • Analytical mindset with an innovative approach.
