You’ll join an established product and engineering team building a business-critical software platform used to manage complex data and operational workflows.

This backend-focused role involves designing and building robust services and APIs, developing complex data models, and implementing integrations with external systems.

Referment is working with a growing European technology company to hire an experienced Software Engineer with a strong backend and infrastructure background.

You’ll join an established product and engineering team building a business-critical software platform used to manage complex data and operational workflows.

This is predominantly a backend engineering position. You’ll work across APIs, data models, integrations and cloud infrastructure, taking ownership of features from initial design through to production.

The company is looking for product-minded engineers who care about building reliable, maintainable software but are also pragmatic enough to make sensible trade-offs and ship.

The Role

• Designing and building robust backend services and APIs.
• Developing complex relational data models and transactional workflows.
• Building integrations with external and third-party systems.
• Developing reliable asynchronous processes, queues and data synchronisation.
• Working with cloud infrastructure and infrastructure-as-code.
• Building systems where reliability, accuracy and auditability are important.
• Taking ownership of technical projects from design through to production.
• Working closely with Product and other engineers to define solutions rather than simply implementing tickets.
• Improving engineering practices, documentation and software architecture.
• Managing technical debt pragmatically while continuing to deliver new functionality.
• Contributing to technical and architectural decisions across the wider engineering team.

What We're Looking For

We’re looking for an experienced software engineer with around 4+ years' commercial engineering experience and a strong backend focus.

You’ll Ideally Have

• Strong backend software engineering experience.
• Experience designing and building production APIs.
• Strong understanding of relational databases and data modelling.
• Experience working with transactional systems and data integrity.
• Experience building asynchronous processes and working with queues.
• Experience integrating complex third-party or legacy systems.
• Experience working with cloud infrastructure.
• Exposure to infrastructure-as-code and modern deployment practices.
• A good understanding of testing, monitoring and building resilient production systems.
• The ability to make pragmatic technical decisions and balance engineering quality with speed of delivery.
• Strong product instincts and an interest in understanding the problem behind what you’re building.
• The ability to work autonomously and take ownership of significant technical problems.

Experience with TypeScript/Node.js, PostgreSQL, Azure, Terraform or Windows-based infrastructure would be useful, although exact technology experience is less important than strong engineering fundamentals and the ability to learn.

This could suit a Senior Software Engineer, Backend Engineer, Backend Software Engineer or Product Engineer looking for greater ownership within a growing technology company.
