Job summary

Gaming1 is seeking a Backend Engineer to join its Sports Betting area and build scalable backend services powering live betting experiences. You’ll work in a high-traffic, regulated context with autonomy, collaboration across product teams, and a focus on reliability, compliance, and performance.

You will own end-to-end solutions, collaborate with Product Managers and Frontend Engineers, and contribute to observability, CI/CD, and resilient architectures in a hybrid setup.

Qualifications

• Experience as a Backend Engineer in product-oriented environments, ideally at scale and/or in regulated contexts.
• Strong backend fundamentals: API design, data modeling, testing, performance, resilience and operability.
• Experience building backend services with a statically-typed language and framework (e.g. C#/.NET, Java, Kotlin, Go), including event-driven architectures.
• Ability to own solutions end-to-end, from design to production and continuous improvement.
• Product-minded, collaborative, and comfortable working in small, autonomous, cross-functional teams.
• Strong sense of ownership, pragmatism, and continuous learning mindset.
• Experience working with relational databases (RDBMS), SQL, and ORMs.

A Backend Engineer at Gaming1 maximizes customer and business value through high-quality, user-centric product experiences.

Engineers operate within small, autonomous product engineering teams in a high-traffic, regulated environment, where decisions directly impact platform stability, customer trust, compliance, and time-to-market. This role sits within our Sports Betting team, where traffic surges around live sporting events and where compliance means jurisdiction-specific rules such as licensing and responsible-gambling requirements.

Because teams are intentionally small and product-oriented, Engineers are expected to be wide in their skillset, flexible in scope, and comfortable collaborating across disciplines. Backend work is not always isolated from product, operational, or cross-team concerns - success comes from end-to-end ownership and shared accountability, not role silos.

This role is part of a broader Product Engineering culture focused on autonomy, short feedback loops, experimentation, and continuous improvement.

YOUR ROLE

As a Backend Engineer, your mission is to design, build, and evolve backend solutions that power customer experiences and business capabilities in a reliable and sustainable way.

You do this by:

• Owning solutions across their lifecycle — from design and implementation to release, monitoring, and iterative improvement.
• Collaborating closely with Product Managers, Frontend Engineers, and other stakeholders.
• Applying strong backend craftsmanship while keeping product impact, reliability, and compliance front of mind — including through the traffic peaks that come with live sporting events.
• Continuously improving systems, practices, tooling, and ways of working.
• Your autonomy, scope, and influence are driven by your career ladder level, not by the job title alone.

YOUR PROFILE

What you bring

• Experience as a Backend Engineer in product-oriented environments, ideally at scale and/or in regulated contexts
• Strong backend fundamentals: API design, data modeling, testing, performance, resilience and operability
• Experience building backend services with a statically-typed language and framework (e.g. C#/.NET, Java, Kotlin, Go), including event-driven architectures
• Ability to own solutions end-to-end, from design to production and continuous improvement
• Product-minded, collaborative, and comfortable working in small, autonomous, cross-functional teams
• Strong sense of ownership, pragmatism, and continuous learning mindset
• Experience working with relational databases (RDBMS), SQL, and ORMs

Nice to have

• Hands-on experience specifically with .NET (C#) and messaging brokers and frameworks such as RabbitMQ, Apache Kafka, or NServiceBus
• Specific experience with PostgreSQL
• Experience containerizing services and deploying them through CI/CD pipelines to Kubernetes (we use GitLab CI/CD and Octopus Deploy)
• Experience with real-time or high-concurrency systems (e.g. live odds, in-play betting, event-driven traffic spikes), or an interest in the sports betting / iGaming domain
• Comfortable owning the observability of what you build — instrumenting, alerting, and monitoring your services in production (we use Datadog)
