NRB is seeking an Analyst Developer PL/I for its Mainframe team in Belgium. You will analyze, develop and maintain legacy Mainframe applications, focusing on reliability, performance and long-term maintainability.

The role combines technical analysis, hands-on PL/I development, and production support within a large organisation. You will collaborate with analysts and business teams, work in a hybrid model, and contribute to stability and evolution of critical systems while leveraging IBM z/OS,

Qualifications

Proven PL/I/Mainframe development experience.
Strong PL/I knowledge in a professional Mainframe environment.
Good knowledge of IBM Mainframe and z/OS.
Experience with DB2 and SQL.
Knowledge of JCL and batch processing.
Experience in technical analysis and development.
Ability to analyze legacy code with limited docs.
Experience in corrective and evolutionary maintenance.
Testing, debugging and support processes.
TSO/ISPF experience expected.
CICS and IMS/DL/I assets.
BMP or transactional processing is an asset.
Schedulers such as TWS/Control‑M are assets.
Production support and ABEND troubleshooting experience appreciated.
Experience in banking/insurance/healthcare or other legacy environments is an asset.
Ability to work independently across lifecycle.
Strong analytical mindset, accuracy and problem solving.
Good communication and collaboration.

Responsibilities

Perform technical analysis of Mainframe applications and business requirements.
Develop, modify and maintain PL/I applications.
Work on corrective and evolutionary maintenance of critical apps.
Analyze existing code, dependencies and application flows.
Develop and maintain batch and transactional processing.
Work with DB2 databases and embedded SQL.
Create, modify and maintain JCL jobs and batch chains.
Work with IMS/DL/I and CICS environments where applicable.
Conduct unit, integration and non-regression testing.
Investigate production incidents and ABENDs.
Support deployment and production activities.
Contribute to performance optimization of Mainframe programs and DB access.
Collaborate with analysts, developers, production teams and stakeholders.
Document technical analyses, developments, fixes and changes.
Contribute to long-term stability of legacy systems.

About The Mission

CONTEXT

As part of the reinforcement of a Mainframe development team within a large Belgian organisation, we are looking for an experienced Analyst Developer PL/I to work on business‑critical applications in an IBM Mainframe environment.

You will combine technical analysis, hands‑on development, corrective and evolutionary maintenance, testing and application support.

You will work on legacy applications that remain central to the organisation’s operational processes and will contribute to their stability, evolution and long‑term maintainability.

The role requires both strong analytical capabilities and the ability to work directly with existing PL/I applications, understand complex dependencies and implement reliable technical changes

Your Main Responsibilities

Perform technical analysis of existing Mainframe applications and business requirements.
Develop, modify and maintain applications written in PL/I.
Work on corrective and evolutionary maintenance of business‑critical applications.
Analyse existing code, application flows and technical dependencies before implementing changes.
Develop and maintain batch and, where applicable, transactional processing.
Work with DB2 databases and embedded SQL within Mainframe applications.
Create, modify and maintain JCL jobs and batch chains.
Work with IMS / DL/I and CICS environments where applicable.
Perform unit, integration and non‑regression testing.
Investigate application issues, production incidents and technical defects.
Perform troubleshooting and root cause analysis on Mainframe applications.
Analyse ABENDs, batch failures, SQL errors and application behaviour.
Support deployment and production activities.
Contribute to performance optimisation of Mainframe programs and database access.
Collaborate with functional analysts, developers, production teams and business stakeholders.
Document technical analyses, developments, fixes and application changes.
Contribute to the long‑term stability and maintainability of legacy systems.

Job Requirements

YOUR PROFILE

Proven professional experience as a PL/I Developer, Mainframe Developer, Analyst Programmer or Analyst Developer.
Strong hands‑on experience with PL/I / PL1 in a professional Mainframe environment.
Good knowledge of IBM Mainframe and z/OS environments.
Strong experience with DB2 and SQL.
Good knowledge of JCL and batch processing.
Experience with technical analysis and application development.
Ability to analyse and understand existing legacy code with limited documentation.
Experience in corrective and evolutionary maintenance.
Good understanding of testing, debugging and application support processes.
Experience with TSO / ISPF is expected.
Experience with CICS is a strong asset.
Experience with IMS / DL/I is a strong asset.
Experience with BMP or transactional Mainframe processing is an asset.
Experience with schedulers such as TWS, Control‑M or equivalent is an asset.
Experience in production support, incident analysis and ABEND troubleshooting is highly appreciated.
