Job summary

ACC Higgins is seeking a Wood Machinist to set up and operate woodworking machines to shape wood stock and finish coffins, frames and other timber products. The role requires reading drawings and determining tool requirements, followed by precise machine operation and finishing work.

Applicants should have AQF Certificate III with two years of on-the-job training or AQF Certificate IV, or NZQF Level 4 in New Zealand; plus relevant experience.

Qualifications

• AQF Certificate III with at least two years on-the-job training or AQF Certificate IV.
• NZQF Level 4 qualification (ANZSCO Skill Level) in New Zealand.
• At least three years of relevant experience may substitute for the formal qualifications listed above.
• Relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be required in addition to the formal qualification.

Responsibilities

• Study drawings, work orders and sample parts to determine specifications
• Determine tooling and machine requirements and sequence of operations
• Set up woodworking machines and wood stock for correct cutting, planning, turning, shaping and sanding
• Operate machines to cut, plane, turn, shape and sand work pieces
• Remove old finishes by stripping with steel wool and glasspaper, and by applying solvents and paint strippers
• Remove softened finishes by scraping
• Apply varnish, shellac, lacquer, stains and paint to surfaces
• Polish and wax finished surfaces
• Fit and fasten frame pieces
• Mount backing materials and subjects for framing

Key responsibilities

• Study drawings, work orders and sample parts to determine specifications
