Job summary

Sirdar Steel Pty Ltd in Somerton, VIC is seeking a qualified Welder (First Class) to join the team. This full-time role (38 hours per week) focuses on welding, fabrication and steel assembly across production operations.

The successful candidate will interpret technical drawings, prepare metal components and perform MIG and gas welds, while upholding safety standards and quality. AQF Certificate IV and 3+ years’ welding experience preferred.

Qualifications

• AQF Certificate IV in Engineering or equivalent.
• Minimum 3 years’ experience as a Welder or similar trade role.
• Proven competency in MIG and gas welding techniques.
• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and fabrication specifications.
• Experience working with structural steel, mild steel, and stainless steel.
• Strong understanding of workplace health and safety practices.
• Ability to safely handle tools, machinery, and heavy materials.
• Reliable, punctual, and able to work independently and within a small team.

Responsibilities

• Study and interpret blueprints, drawings and specifications to determine fabrication and welding requirements.
• Select, clean and prepare metal stock for fabrication in accordance with job specifications.
• Measure, mark out, cut and shape metal sections using hand tools, flame-cutting equipment and metal-cutting machinery.
• Shape, bend and form metal sections and pipes using hand tools, machinery, heating and other fabrication techniques.
• Align components accurately using measuring instruments, clamps and hand tools prior to welding or assembly.
• Join metal sections using MIG and gas welding, bolting and riveting as required.
• Examine welds for bead width, penetration, alignment, strength and precision to ensure compliance with quality standards.
• Clean, smooth and finish welds using grinding, filing, chiselling and other finishing equipment.
• Clean, polish and finish fabricated products to the required standard.
• Fabricate and assemble metal components in accordance with engineering drawings, project specifications and applicable Australian Standards.
• Inspect completed work to ensure accuracy, structural integrity and quality compliance.
• Operate and maintain welding equipment, tools and workshop areas in a clean, safe and serviceable condition.
• Identify material requirements and report defects, discrepancies or safety concerns to supervisor.
• Follow all workplace health and safety requirements, including correct use of personal protective equipment.
• Work collaboratively with fabricators, tradespeople and supervisor to ensure projects are completed efficiently and to the required standard.

This is a full-time position (38 hours per week) where the Welder will be responsible for high-quality welding, fabrication, and steel assembly work across our production operations.
