Job summary

Ohana Academy Cairns is seeking an experienced teacher to deliver trauma-informed, inclusive education for students aged 12–17 on youth justice orders. You will shape curriculum in an alternative learning setting, using project-based learning and practical experiences to engage students meaningfully.

The role involves delivering Australian Curriculum, developing individual learning plans, collaborating with wellbeing staff, and contributing to the school’s broader education and employment

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Education or equivalent teaching qualification.
  • Current Queensland College of Teachers (QCT) registration.
  • Extensive teaching and learning experience.
  • Experience teaching in a flexible, alternative or non-traditional education environment.
  • Strong understanding of barriers facing disengaged young people.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage young people through relevant and dynamic learning.
  • Strong curriculum development and delivery skills.
  • Experience with project-based learning and differentiated teaching approaches.
  • Excellent behaviour management skills.
  • High-level knowledge of supporting students with disabilities.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, deliver and evaluate engaging alternative learning programs.
  • Deliver the Australian Curriculum and QCAA curriculum via project-based learning.
  • Teach across multiple curriculum areas as required.
  • Develop individual learning plans with staff.
  • Support literacy and numeracy progress.
  • Lead literacy and numeracy interventions.
  • Collaborate with youth mentors, teacher aides and wellbeing team.
  • Contribute to reporting and evaluation of outcomes.
  • Support the development of the new Youth Justice School model.
