Job summary

Yass Valley Council is seeking a Transfer Station Operator for the Council's transfer stations. This part-time role supports safe, efficient and environmentally responsible operation with a hands-on approach.

The successful candidate will maintain facilities, help customers with disposal and recycling, and ensure compliance with WHS policies while working outdoors in varying conditions. Experience in waste management is valued.

  • Experience in waste management or local government is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain a clean, safe and well-presented facility.
  • Assist customers with recycling and waste disposal.
  • Provide friendly and professional customer service to the community.
  • Monitor dump sites to prevent contamination and illegal dumping.
  • Collect recyclables and items of monetary value.
  • Sort plastic and glass containers into correct receptacles.
  • Record daily takings and reconcile transactions.
  • Follow Council WHS policies and procedures at all times.

Salary: $31.15 - $33.65 per hour plus 12% Superannuation

• Permanent Part Time – 17 hours per week.
• Work available at various Council Transfer Stations.
• PPE and uniform provided.

We are seeking a reliable, motivated and customer-focused Transfer Station Operator to join our local government team on a part-time basis.

This is a hands-on role supporting the safe, efficient and environmentally responsible operation of our local waste transfer station.

About the Role

As a Transfer Station Operator, you will be responsible for:

  • Maintaining a clean, safe and well-presented facility.
  • Assist customers with recycling and waste disposal.
  • Providing friendly and professional customer service to members of the community.
  • Monitor dump sites to ensure material is not contaminated and that no hazardous material is illegally dumped.
  • Collect recyclables and other items of monetary value.
  • Collect and sort plastic and glass containers and place in appropriate containers.
  • Record daily takings and transaction information for reconciliation purposes.
  • Work in a safe manner and ensure all Council WHS policies and procedures are adhered to at all times.
About You

We are looking for someone who:

  • Is reliable, punctual and able to work independently.
  • Has a strong commitment to workplace health and safety.
  • Has good communication and customer service skills.
  • Is comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Is physically capable of performing the duties of the position.
  • Can follow procedures and work effectively as part of a small team.
  • Has an interest in waste management, recycling and environmental sustainability

Previous experience in waste management, transfer stations, construction, local government or a similar operational environment will be highly regarded. Relevant licences or tickets, including a skid steer, excavator and HR or above licences may also be advantageous.

Your Working Environment (for eligible employees)
  • Adverse Working Conditions Allowance of $1.38 per hour.
  • Includes weekend and public holiday work.
  • All Uniforms & PPE supplied.
