Job summary

Aurizon in Darwin is recruiting for a Rail Operator (Shunter) Trainee to learn safe and efficient movement of rollingstock within our terminal and yard environments, performing shunting, marshalling, brake testing and locomotive servicing under supervision.

This hands-on role forms a critical link in our freight operations and offers a clear pathway to becoming a qualified Locomotive Driver, with Trainee Driver positions often offered to top performers from our Rail and Terminal Operator teams.

Qualifications

• Current C Class Driver’s Licence
• A strong safety mindset with attention to detail
• Mechanically minded with solid problem‑solving skills
• Confident communicator with the ability to work in a team
• Flexibility to work across day/night shifts and weekends as part of a rotating roster
• Qualified shunters are also encouraged to apply

Responsibilities

• Learn to safely control train movements and carry out operational instructions in accordance with procedures
• Assist with inspections, minor servicing, and fault identification on rollingstock
• Support maintenance of locomotives, support vehicles, and other depot equipment
• Perform brake tests, examinations and ensure compliance with rail safety standards under guidance
• Communicate effectively with depot staff, train control, and clients via two‑way radio and face‑to‑face
• Undertake shunting, marshalling, and general yard duties under supervision
• Support other depot functions as required
